This thread is for those times that windsurfers and kiters come together on the water. It's not about competition, or slagging one another off, it's about letting people know what has happened so that we can avoid incidents in the future.

OK I'll start:

Today at the strip I noticed a kiter in the middle of the manic speedsailors. About half an hour later, I saw that same kiter swimming for the bank, with a downed kite. A couple of windsurfers were helping him out. The story I got went along these lines:

The kite lines went slack, and a windsurfer was screaming along on the speed strip, so he went low to avoid the kite. Then the kite powered up, and the windsurfer's sail hit the kite, ripping it badly. The kite couldn't fly anymore, so the kiter swam to the bank.
After a while, a windsurfer brought a spare board for the kiter, so he could paddle to shore.

Does anyone know anything more about this? How could this situation be avoided in the future?

Was it one of the new "bow" kites or an older "c" kite????

I've heard that the bow kites are a lot safer, but if anything goes wrong they tend to fall out of the air. (That's what makes the safer) Where as the old C kites tend to just keep powering up.

If it was a bow, then in this case falling out of the sky is maybe not so safe.

Think the windsurfer was lucky the lines didn't tangle in his rig/him that could have been nasty.

If I was windsurfing and that happened in front of me, if the kite was downwind, I'd drop into the water, till he'd got clear. If he was upwind, just have to pick the safest looking course and keep fingers crossed and get out of there as quick as possible.

Sounds to me like one of those things.
sometimes kites will luff and if not rigged/trimmed properly can drop out of the sky, especially in gusty conditions and/or in a newbies hands.

I guess it has to be asked, but why kite right smack bang in a mob of windsurfers all trying to break the 200km/h mark?

My favourite windsurfing spot is not frequented by kiters. But on Saturday I was sailing there with a couple of mates and 2 kiters came out to join us. This place gets crowded fairly easily and can easily be stuffed up if people aren't looking out for each other.

These guys were tops, returned my wave & smile and shared the break, played by the rules and had much respect for everyone on the water. Thumbs up to them and all water-users like them.

I'm not saying I'm surprised that these guys had manners, just wanted to share a win-win story to point out how good the inter-sport relations are going these days and to promote the vibe.

Respect.

I think you should call it your local Leech
And I am bummed to the max that you mentioned you were there with a couple of mates
But I agree totally with you on the windsurfer/kiter interaction thingy. With 8 to 10 windsurfers out the place does get squishy. Throw some strings in amongst the action and it gets stoopid
I personally think that the kiters who kite there are surfers and go there for the wave?
Thats why I go there

There is only one solution!

Chop ALL their bits off. On the hour, ever hour.

Let them know we are not to be trifled with.

And don't give in to blackmail...
