Is there another search engine out there that may give me another point of view?

I went into my gmail account and checked out what they know about me - more than I know about myself!

I have sold my soul to Google...resistance is futile!

Try yahoo.com or msn.com a little more newsy, rather than just a search engine.
Mind you the search results are less than google but more than good enough for every day searching.

I have checked some of those links - alternatives seemed like swapping to yahoo - which is the better evil?

It just freaks me out that when using Gmail they are reading your email and suggesting various ad's and products. they even had my old credit card details - not sure how they even got them. Seems like 1984 all over again. Maybe Resistance Is Futile?

Yeah thinking the same thing.

Perhaps with your email consider using the email supplied by your ISP? Of course the down side of that is if your ISP goes bust or you swap providers then you have to start a new email address.

What annoyed me was once Facebook sent me an email of possible 'friends'. It was people who had emailed me one way or another to my gmail account. Its really an invasion of privacy that Facebook knows who has sent me email.

They're not 'reading your email' really, there's millions of emails per second going through a computer algorithm to pick out keywords. Then that program chooses ads with those keywords.

Then your email (any email from any system) goes through the 'echelon' system and the yanks scan it for words like 'jihad' 'bomb' etc. But for the most part they don't 'read' it either - unless you use those words.

You can disable those ads that google give you lots of ways, using 'adblock' extension in firefox would be most recommended. I can't stand seeing the internet full of flashy flashy ads ie when I'm not using adblock + flashblock.

If you use work email ([email protected]) at work - well guess what the IT guys ARE reading your mail. And they know who you are. This is a much bigger privacy issue for those not smart enough to keep work email for work only!
