well i have posted before i want to get an apprenticeship for sometime next year or the year after, but i have recently been thinking about getting into chef type apprenticeships, i have been working as a dish pig for a nice resteraunt for around 6 months and i have been looking at how it is done. ever since i was little i have loved being in the kitchen and mucking around with flavors to see what best mixes with what, and i have been thinking quite strongly about this chef thing lately. (plus i can get mornings off to go windsurfing)

only problem is i have no idea how to go about it, one of my mates is an apprentice chef and i asked her and all she said is they asked her if she wanted to become an apprentice after a few months for working with them, my kitchen isnt likely to get an apprentice in. so any hints would be helpfully. (another thing is that you dont need to be able to spell)

Mornings off to go windsurfing?
Stick to the sparky job, you will make more money and you will have the afternoons off to go windsurfing

Jord,
have a good think about the chef thing man. kitchen might not open for the customers till 5 ish but you'll be prepping most afternoon.
Do it if its a dream, don't do it for the sailing. also means work every weekend or basicly whenever you'r mates are having time of and vice versa. But again follow your heart

yeah as i said i have been working in a kitchen for close to half a year now, and i no what is involved as to preparations and stuff. also my mate is a apprentice chef and i have been speaking to her about what she does and her duties, she works at a resteraunt in mandurah on the golfcoarce and she loves it. up until around grade 9 to midway through grade 10 i had wanted to be a chef, and it wasn't until i had the worst home economics teacher that i came to the umming and aring i had, but i have started cooking at home again, and i love it so this is what has brought it back on. and i wouldnt do any job just for the sailing, its just an added bonus if you can still have those things you love, and as to the whole anti social night life, i havent really ever had that big of night life so it wont affect me to much

the only thig about being a chef is that the pay and most conditions are crap so yeah unless it's a real dream then i dont think it's a good idea, my dad just opened a cafe in my yacht club so i get to cook if im needed and i can sail whenever the wind is up

yer man i wouldn't become a chef aye. the hours suk arse i was also dish pig for 1 year it never works because wen u wanna be out with freinds having dinner ur always stuk behind a stove waiting for ur shift to be over als have u worked in a kitchen in the summer time during lunch say chrismas lunch holy **** it gets hot in there new years day i was workin as dish pig and the kitchen was about 38 degrees and i had my hands in hot water and u haveto wear long pants. stik with being an electrician.

Another thing to think about is that it isn't compulsary to continue being an electrician (in my case) after u have finished your apprenticeship sure it seems like a waste i must admit but if u get a trade that has a really high demand u can go around being joe slaker trying different jobs and if u run out of money just go to work for 6 months and become a slaker again. my plan is to become a permanent electrician on an island resort somwere (like green island or something) and live the life although it would probly get a bit borin being around the same people all the time. but yer thats my 100 cents lol.

Jord,being a chef myself(18 yrs) i thought i might join in
1,great job IF its a passion(mighty hard slog if not)
2,travel- have spent heaps of time os with work(before i took up windsurfing sadly)but then it seems aussies can get work doing anything anywhere
3,pay is like anything you do ,the harder you work the better you get the more money you earn(just no call outs at double time!why does nobody need a chicken parma fixed at 3am sunday morning!)
4,true you do work alot of weekends but when its blowing its arse off tuesday ,that quiet sail without all the weekend warriors is great(no offence to any WW out there)
5,look in papers for any work or pester the hell out resturants in your area ,good luck

Think about when you get married and have kids. Do you want to come home from work as an electrician at 2 or 3 in the arvo and spend time with your wife and kids and then sit down to a dinner that you have cooked and you have enjoyed cooking for them. Rather than missing that great time in the arvo to cook for total strangers???
Having a trade you can windsurf everyday of the week
BTW Im not having a go at you Chef Im grateful that I can go out to dinner and have someone cook for me

Don't think about getting married and having kids...(Greeny what the hell has happened to you dudeHas someone hijacked your ID LOL). Also don't think about being a chef or baker for that matter. Crap money crap hours, you will also lose the enjoyment of cooking and eating food for yourself. Because you'll be so over it fom all day at work.

You where on the right track a few months ago, read through the post about being a sparky again heaps of people gave some very good advice. You can't go wrong. WA and QLD are going off and will be for years to come, the bonus is they both have great wind as well...

It's a confusing time for you, but seriously weigh up the pro's and con's.

BTW your from WA our best wind is in the summer arvo's. Well that's when the chef's are working preparing for the restaurant to open for the night..

Think that is the way to go
Besides, when you catch up with all of us guys at somewhere like Corros or the big "G" you can take control of the barbie plate and cook us up a storm

My 2 cents Jord,

I think there's a bit of hypocracy in this forum...I asked (a while back) about travel & finances (I'd post the link, but it would probably bore you.)

The advice I was given was to sacrifice the dollars to follow your heart, I think that carries across to everything, including employment. I know guys on big bucks that are miserable in their jobs, and guys that live week-to-week and are the happiest and passionate people you would meet because they spend their working hours doing what they are passionate about.....

You're obviously passionate about your windsurfing (good on ya!), imagine if you had a job that you had the same passion about!....You'd enjoy work & play (best of both worlds!)

hi its greenroomette here.... oh how i would love a husband that cooks but i have chefs in my family and they work really hard for their money, and greenroom downs tools at any opp, sorry dear. The hours are great, the kids and me see him lots and he gets in the odd windsurf during the week (5 or 6). Have you thought about doing some extra cooking courses just out of interest, as a hobby cos then you would always enjoy it, and not hate it cos its work.

hi chef. doing good, greenroomette here. I am a teacher , thought i really liked kids.... then had to do it every day for work.... so in my case it turned out not so good...... now i just want to work with grown ups. Your wife is very lucky to have someone who can actually cook greenroom's idea of cooking is pasta with tomato sauce and cheese, bless his heart. Do you come home from work and cook for your family? lucky them I think that having a trade, what ever it is you will ALWAYS have work so what ever jordo decides is a good choice. luv greenroomette
