Hi

i am a 17y.o dinghy sailor in S.E Qld who is sick of wating for crew just to go for a sail. As i am not attracted to the single person boats available i am intrested in starting windsurfing, i tried kitesurfing but i would eventually want to race and i like the idea of windsurfing better. I was just after some advice on learning to windsurf and racing in S.E Qld. I am also inrested in how other ppl swapped from a boat, and if they have any suggestions.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hey Im from Perth, my bro and I both sailed dinghies and started windsurfing about 3 years ago. We just taught ourselves on dodgy equipment...its not that hard as you already have better knowledge of wind and how sails work than most windsurfers do, you just have to get used to balancing board and rig. Even so, good learners equipment with fat boards will make it infinitely faster and easier to learn, and lessons arent a bad investment either. Just take a look on the net at the basic ways to steer and balance and rig etc etc then have a go... expect to be in the water alot. I dont know much about the racing in Qld sorry.

Hav fun!!

Good to hear your crossing over. At redcliffe i think they have a bit of formula racing i'm not sure about race boards. If you can tacticly race this will make up a fair bit for lack of technique which takes a bit longer to pick up. there aren't many girls in the sport who are competitve or even race but you'll find its a really helpful crowd. i did the transition a while back and found it easy in the light wind when there is less technique involved but heavy weather gybing took a bit of practice.

Obviously the easiest way to start off is to get some lessons, if you are a quick learner this also saves you some $$$ as you wont need to buy a traditional learner board and rig, a few lessons and you will probably be able to go out and buy a shortboard. That said I dont think I sail with one person which started by taking lessons, the majority is friend or self taught. Most boat sailors have a pretty effortless transition and many of the best sailors I know were boat sailors at some stage. In day to day windsurfing it dosent make much difference, in racing it certainly helps.

Racing in queensland see here -> www.windsurfingqld.com/
Maybe go along to watch a race or two before you decide to enter, they run two different fleets; formula and "freeride" which is anything not formula including older style racing gear, freeride races are set across or downwind. Any level of sailor can have a go at racing... if you can plane, tack and gybe reasonably well you will do ok. The womens fleet is not big in queensland, for that matter nor is the mens racing fleet but there are some good sailors there and you will learn quicker racing against the guys. Formula racing is expensive with one rig and board costing up to $10,000 then you may go through several masts a season but it is where course racing is currently at on sailboards.

One other thing, there is alot of bad advice on equipment in windsurfing, just make sure you consider where you want to end up and it will save you some money in the end.

in saying that formula equipment can be picked up reasonably cheaply 2nd hand. there is also the new olmpic board, which is one design has a high calibre tactical fleet and is around $5500 complete new. though as with formula it does take a bit of strength though you will build this up quickly while racing

hey, im also a 17 y.o ex-dinghy sailor in south east qld. i started windsurfing bout a year ago and havent looked back. windsurfing is alot quicker and more exiciting than sailing a boat. WQ, in conjunction with LCSC have windsurfing races (both slalom and formula) at lake cootharaba once a month (the first one of the season was last sun) and also in redcliff. details at the website listed in the previous post.
