look for a RIP. It is a current that will carry you out the back of the breaks without the pummelling.
If you don't know how to find a rip, just watch bondi rescue, they cover rips every 5 minutes.

Seriously you're floating on a board, being taken out to the back of the break You are NOT being dragged under (the old term under-tow is wrong) and you are not being dragged out to sea, it only goes about as far out as the back of the breakers.
Surfers use them alot.
