I just watched the 'Cove" movie, I am absolutely appalled at the the killing of thousands of dolphins as shown in Japan.
One wonders about how a "civilized" society like Japan allows this to continue. The lies and propaganda that surrounds this situation is also evident in the lack of acknowledgment of the radiation that has leaked from the ****ishima plant.
The Japanese people are pawns in the corruption that seemingly is endemic in all levels of the system of Government, bravo to the people behind the making of that movie and exposing the failure of understanding and reason

I haven't seen that movie yet, but the dolphin slaughter in Japan has been going on for a very very long time. I remember first reading about it in the school library when I was about 13, some 25 years ago....

I was looking out over Corio Bay the other day, checking where to go for a distance SUp paddle. I was near Rippleside, and there is a guy doing about 70kph on his Ski (PWC), and then I notice 2 dolphins pop up just near him. He didn't see them at first.... 400m down, he turns around, and he's doing 70kph right back where he came from, back towards the dolphins that he didn't see. Then 1 surfaced just 20m ahead of him off to the left. So he backs off, turn around, and circles around them, just to watch the dolphins in nature.... But the clown just continued to circle them. I was pretty sure he was doing something illegal, so I rang the police. The police seemed to agree.... I told them I had to move on, they said fine. I said I didn't know where he launched from, and that he could move really quickly, and the girl said, "that's alright, they've just messaged back that they have a visual on him". Big Brother is always watching !!

That kills the myth that dolphins are smart! if this has been going on for over 25 years why wouldn't they avoid the area?

Part of the doco mentioned a few neighbouring areas that used to do mass kills of dolphins, now they're the ones buying dolphins from Taiji.

The Japanese fisherman kill the entire pod. So no one to teach the young to stay away. The killing season starts again on the 1st of September. They heard the entire pod in, take the ones they want to sell to aquariums like sea world, take the babies out and throw them in local tanks, (they normally only last a week or two before they die so they need to be recycled weekly) and the rest are cut up and sold as whale meat.

Also the dolphins travel this route as it they are following food sources. SO not a huge choice unfortunately.

In the movie, 'the cove' it was suggested that the dolphin meat sold, has a high mercury reading that makes the meat unsuitable for human consumption, that now will only be exacerbated by the toxic spills from the nuclear plant.
So I guess the old saying will be, "what goes round comes round" . Maybe apart from the dangers to health, the Japanese may become tourist attractions themselves, by their ability to glow in the dark, Am I being to harsh by saying its Karma?

Not harsh at all imo. I thought it was funny that the fisheries guy that got the sack tested positive for mercury as well. I hope he is haunted by this until his death.

Where is barn? He will have some sort of convoluted opinion on the subject.

Whats the difference between slaughtering dolphins in that manner to queuing up the cows at the slaughter house.
If eating dolphin meat and whale meat is sustainable why don't we do it?

When you see 'earthlings' you kinda feel everything is fair game cute or not.

I have the same feelings Poor Relative. I think its a bit hypocritical for someone to criticise a people for killing sea mammals for food when their own people industrialise the production and killing of a huge number of land mammals for food.

Of course most people don't like to see animals being slaughtered. Thats why abbatoirs have big walls around them and why we call them something like abbatoirs or meatworks instead of what they really are, slaughter houses.

Yes, I watched it too. I usually make a point of missing those doccos - I find them too sad - but I'm glad I watched it. Just makes me think how sick our society really is.

The one thing I didn't quite get was why they were feeding the dolphin to the school children knowing about the mercury content. Why were they doing that?

All this importing of food into Australia - brazillian oranges, Vietnamese prawns etc etc couldn't be good.

The term "endangered"(whales) comes to mind first off. We farm cows for other things other than meat.
To hell with it, lets start eating each other!

dolphins are not endangered and whales can be hunted sustainably if the industry is regulated. it is far worse, ecologically speaking, to eat tuna, salmon, shark or crab.

dolphins and whales are 'cute' and this is somehow a basis for protection in the western world. to say they are 'intelligent' is just as flawed, why should an intelligent animal (as judged by a human) have more right to life than a less intelligent one?

Simple really.

We haven't figured out a way to "farm" dolphins yet !!
And I can't see slaughtering whole pods of dolphins as sustainable.

I guess there is one plus though -- the consumers of the dolphin meat will possibly die out before the dolphins do due to the mercury contamination.....
