Wanting to take the young fellas fishing over the weekend. I'm in Perth. The boys are nine & have just got rods for their b-day. Looking at jetty suggestions or the like along the metro coast for an early sat or sun start. Recommendations appreciated.

If they can cast over waves (hah what waves ) the section between floreat and brighton is pretty popular to go off the beach there.

If they are just after the fun of catching fish, and not to fussed on what, perhaps try the jetty at Ocean Reef Marina - they'll get plenty of blowies and trumpeters that'll keep em happy... and could score a skippy or yellow tail.

They'll be able to see them as they wind them in too - which kids always like.

Blowies suck.

Kids love the whole process and enjoy being able to eat what they catch (as do we all).

I take my young'uns (6 & 8) beach fishing, pretty much anywhere along the coast is good.

Got them a couple of cheapo kids rod & reel sets, put a whiting rig on them and bait up with ox heart or prawn and you'll get a feed of whiting at the least.

If you're not targeting anything specific or to worried about the time you go, straight off a sandy beach will get you a bunch whiting, and maybe a couple of herring.

Look for gutters along the beach for more success.

Fish at reefy beaches for a bit more variety, you can get a nice mixed bag of wrasse, sweeps, cods, silver bream, grunters etc.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the early morning thing, I have had good catches during all parts of the day.

But if you really want to put a bit of science behind the times you fish, go to your local newsagent and get a copy of the 'Anglers Almanac', well worth the six bucks.

EDIT: I hate jettys and rockwalls due to the blowies being pretty much the majority of what you catch.
And fishing on the beach means you don't have to be worried about your kids falling off rocks or jetty's if one of them gets bored with fishing.
