Hi Paul,
isn't it one of those life saving devices for rock fishermen/swimmers that is normally attached to the shore, there is normally a life ring on the other end so if someone get's into trouble you throw it out and the rope reels off through the pvc. Not 100% certain, but it look's like an earlier home made one.

Not sure...... Paper weight?
Maybe if you stick a clock on it, it could be a clock holder?

Does it have a place where a cartridge can be inserted?? If so it is a heaving line launcher and could become a great toy.[}:)][}:)]

Guys, this is an acoustic release commonly used to allow equipment (including scientific gear)to "pop" to the surface. Judging by the photo this one has not been activated so its simply come free of its subsurface mooring. This one may belong to either the CSIRO IMOS program or perhaps WA fisheries? Either way the bit of gear it was attched to is obviously long gone.

. Making progress with that object. It may yet get home yet!!!!. glad to see seabreeze is getting out to the world. got this email from a member today

"My name is Alistair Hobday and i deployed the piece of equipment you posted a picture of on seabreeze. Can you pls send me an email, and I can explain what the equipment is, what it does, and I hope arrange a way to ask you to send it back to me, as I hope it contains data on detections of southen bluefin tuna.

Cheers

Alistair "
