I need to freight some gear from California to QLD. Anybody had any experience in this type of venture???

if you give us an example, like a board, of some sails, or fins, or kites you will probaly get more relpys, but i cant help you out

I've had stuff sent from UK on a number of occasions. Pretty cheap. It goes on size rather than weight, unless you want it by air. I paid $240 for a snowboard and 2 large tea-chests to give you an idea. That includes insurance. Took about 8 weeks including processing. There are tons of shipping companies, google is your friend, unless you're in China.

For what its worth.
If you get anything shipped by air they go by cubic weight, not the dead weight of the goods.
The formula is measure L (length) x W (width) x B (breadth) or LWB. then multiply this by 250 and this will give you the cubic weight. Pretty much always more than dead weight, be warned.
