Jordo, felt the same urge about a 18 months ago.

Got a guitar and some "How to" books and have been plucking away. And thats where I still am, plucking away and not really getting any better, have come to the conclusion that I need a teacher to push me alongt.

Look in the classified section of your local paper, which is probably the Canning Times, under mucial tuition, you will find half a dozen teachers.

The teachers will get you started and help you out with getting your fingers onto the right strings etc. The only thing after that is practice, practice and then some more practice .... bit like sailing really

I been learning guitar for a couple years now and finding it realy easy. I had about 8 years of piano behind me which made it so much easier. Have you ever learned a instrument before or do u still?

Anyway defently get a teacher. Makes it soooooo much easier. I found a guy just through school whos great so i would suggest trying that, but it depends on your schools music department. Then you don't have to take up any of your weekends. You can usually do them during lesson at school, or during lunch times and after school depending when you and your teacher can. But get a teacher anyway you can. Speeds up the process significantly. Make sure you find someone you like and lets you play the music you want to, otherwise its just not as fun. Don't just give up on your first teacher.

As far as buying a guitar, mabey if you just get a few lessons first and see how you like it. You can usually hire guitar from the school or your teacher once again depending on the music department. My first guitar i borrowed from a mate so thats the best if you know of anyone. Once your sure you like it and want to keep playing, i would suggest forking out the money for a good guitar and amp that will last you for years and years. If you just buy a cheapy with a small amp you will soon want a better guitar within no time. Keep an eye out at all the sales, best time is around christmas. I got around 2 grand worth of equipment (guitar, 300 watt PA system and all accsessories) for about 1300-1400 (split 50-50 with parents as my christmas and birthday present). As i said before its worth paying the extra because that will last me all my life unless i start making money from it and decide get a realy good guitar. I wouldn't recomend buying second hand though because you never know how much the gear has been thrashed, its very easy to do so and theres no real way for you to find out. Also after a while i bought a acustic electric guitar which when you start playing more you realise is a much better option, but always get the straight electric first.

Anyway hope this helps. This is one of my passionate subjects so if you need any more help or advice at all, just let me know.

yeah bubs i had played piano but i suked, and hated it, so i can read a little bit of music but not for guitars, and i already have two guitars, acoustic and electric, both pretty good ones, i think my sister had a stage of wanting to play so forked out and got good stuff, than just never touched them, so im looking forward to learning, and i defiantly agree with getting a teacher who will let you play what you like, i think blues and rock would be good to get into, simply because they are so different you will get a wider range of skills, what kind of music are you into playing bubs??

yeah guitar tabs are a bit different than piano music but the knowledge of music from piano helped heaps.

I play a bit of everything realy except for metal and hard core crap music. Mainly old school rock like eagles, BTO, Aerosmith, clapton those types of bands but also a bit of chillies, powderfinger and those newer bands. Thats why i need the two guitars because some of eagles and others just doesn't sound right on a electric guitar. When you first start out bands like greenday and that are realy easy songs but you will soon grow out of them and find them boring. I just don't like the band anymore because i know there so repetive and boring. In my band i have to play those easy songs because thats what kids like to hear, and also playing and singing is much harder so playing a easier song makes it a bit better. What type of music are you into, just listening on your mp3 player and what not?

What type of guitars have you got and what type of amp? How many watts? good to hear you already got the gear makes it so much esier.

Well anyway good luck. Again if you need any more advice just let me know.

hahahaha, love it, yeah i hate hardcore and screemo,

im more into the mellow stuff, and the old school classics, and all the bands and artist you like i like, but if you wanna hear the more modern music i like tune into triple j the radio station, i dont think i have ever heard a song i dont like on there, my guitars are. luthier's choice custom series and a hand crafted Montoya (m-10m). i dont have the amp on me, but i think i was a pretty good one and around 150 watts, or maby 300,

It's called 'Guitar Hero' found on the Playstation 2.... Or for the real keen, on the PS3 there's Gutar Hero: Rock Band (Vocals[like SingStar], lead guitar, bass and drums) that won't help you much at all, however it gives you an idea of 4/4 beats and stuff like that... it's also pretty damned amusing after a drink or 13.

English language doesn't help of course/coarse (come on Jords you get this one wrong all the time, which/witch is right).
Then there's there/their here/hear bare/bear ad infinitum.

Jordo,

I use Powertab software which I find really useful. It's free and you can download it from here www.power-tab.net/guitar.php

There are literally millions of power tabs out there and most are pretty accurate although since the music industry has threatened legal action regarding tabbing of copyrighted material they have gone underground somewhat.

Sites like Ultimate Guitar www.ultimate-guitar.com/ still has lots of Power Tabs available for downloading.

Other sites like Harmony Central are also pretty good too. Check out www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/Riff/ for free lessons and daily riffs.

yeah those sites are great i use them a lot except learning to read them is so much easier if you have a teacher. Start you off easy then gradually get harder because some of those tabs can be quite hard to understand. If i were you jord i would look into your music department at school and see what they have to offer.

Hey jord,

I have been playing since '95 (5 years with a guitar teacher whilst at school).

I would recommend
- getting a couple of lessons with a tutor (should be around $30 an hour).
- buying a 200-300 guitar (Don't be fooled like most to go straight to an electric...trust me).
- get onto the free tab sites and ask your friends for help.

A few of my mates did it like this and they are playing very well after only 1 year. One is a metallica nut so it can be quite difficult.

The first couple of lessons can make or break you but if you stick with it, you'll be laughing...especially when the girls at the party flock to you!

Cheers
Dan

Hey jords,

No no, if you have both then you have the best of both worlds. I am just saying, people usually go straight for the electrics but they're soon asking for an accoustic because it is much easier to muck around on.

Anyway, if you're really keen I may be able to hook you up with one of my mates for a lesson or two. Hell, I'll do it for a few beers.

Ta for those links airman.

Hope you have better luck with lessons than I did Jord.

Back in 93 I had my one and only lesson folowed the very next morning by motorbike accident that left my left hand/wrist crushed and on almost backwards!!

Pretty ordinary sight I can tell you.. still I managed to crack the old "will I still be able to play piano" joke with the paramedic. After much badgering he finally replied "yeah mate I think you will be still able to play".. "fantastic" I said "I've never been able to play before". It was about this time he decided to give me the nighty night juice.. I'm sure he was thinking "one powerball..."

Thank gawd for the webworld and all the free tabs etc. There just isn't enough sweet child of mine polluting the suburbs.

Jord, make sure you warm up before attempting a windmill.. you don't wanna get locked in that posi and spend the whole next day in classes saying "nup, I don't know the answer I just can't put my arm down".
