Anyone own or driven one of these? looking at buying one end /start of next year to trade in my patrol and magna exec for something smaller 4wd and with looks to charm the pants off a sue zuki

/images/misc/forum-image-missing.gif

If so, would like your thoughts and experience of them. Mixed reviews but it's mostly yanks that have posted reviews and you know what they are like, almost as bad as the poms

Anyone got some pics of one pimped would be sweet too!

The new 4 door almost looks like a hummer on a smaller scale with its boxy look (who thinks the new hilux/tritons look gay!!!) - although a hummer is not my thing and isn't why I would want one because I am looking at downgrading the 4.2 lt turbo and the v6 for something a little less thirsty for the juice but lighter for off-road usage such as the 2 door wrangler!

Streer clear of anything that slightly resembles a hummer (aka jeep grand cherokee). Instand ****er reputation.
It looks better than the spewzuki varient. And would be a fun thrash in sand me thinks.

yeah the jeep grand cherokee looks like a city slickers waynkers car...then again most of the wranglers I have seen have been in the big smog.

I have been told the Wrangler variant available in Aust is more pose than capability. Need to get the Rubicon Trail pack (as the photo shows) which has higher and better suspension and better ratios for off road. They really can't carry much - so only really any good for a lone tea-bagger or two, which will suit the pose image anyway.

lol! yeah its not a family car for the fat misses and the 5 kids , although the suspension thing is fixed easily enough with raising it and adding some decent springs/shockies, as long as it can tow the jet ski as well, for the complete full a$ehole image look

I think the rubicon has more to do with the diff lock system than the anything else.. From what I have read up, but will have to read up some more now!

(I only ask on here because the local jeep affiliate doesn’t have any in stock - and they are car salesmen/persons so asking them is like asking a seabreeze user for a sail/kite/board review – ok I see the irony in that so no need to point it out)

Have a mate who is a fourby enthusiast and I'm an ex petrol head so may count for something. He had a very pimped Jeep lifted, big wheels diff locks and all the shizit.
(1) Caused him nothing but trouble. EG: 3 water pumps at $300 each in a 6 month period. A park- neutral switch (what stops you from starting an auto when in drive) failed so car would not start at all. $700 (I sh%t you not!!!) for a little switch.

(2) they are cheap for a mid sized fourby but there is a reason . A jap mid sized liek Prado / Pathfinder is a waaaay more capable and reliable fourby and rides better on road too. Same or better on fuel. The seppo's get carried away with the Wrangler's off road abiltity as it is the only standard fourby that has doen the Rubicon trail in standard trim. So what.. that is only cos all their other fourbies are too long, and the short wheelbase of the Wrangler gives it good ramp over ability. Same effetc in a swb cruiser or a suzi

(3) you can't put stuff on the roof! If you windsurf you'll struggle... kite or surf OK

(4) a mid sized fourby wagon carries more gear. In my Mitsi Challenger I fit 3 waveboards and 6 sails easily and still carry other stuff like all my beer sfor after a sail and work gear etc. Try that with a Wrangler

If I had $10 for every Jeep I have rescued from the beach...

I don't know if Jeeps are shiz off-road, or if it is the owners that don't know how to drive on sand.

If you are looking at getting a short wheelbase 4WD, why not get a Landrover D90? At least that way, you'll be the one pulling other people out of bogs. Plus you won't look like a seppo w4nker.

Thanks for the input,

DL, I think the jeeps off-road is more towards the mud/rock type of off-road experience than the sand, decent wide wheels and low tyre pressure would help, alas I bet its the drivers that don’t deflate their tyres that are the ones getting stuck (i.e. - city slickers), have a mate telling me the exact opposite of owning a jeep how he was always having to pull others out!

Nice land rover btw! My last landcruiser ute had the same custom paintjob color and believe it or not the exact same wheels!

Mark_australia thanks for the feedback too, food for thought...that info does put me off a little, your mates name wouldn’t be Paul by any chance? (7 degrees of separation and all that bollocks)

mintoxGP...more info, or you were just taking the micky, cant tell the diff sometimes

I have a jeep cherokee sport effing awsome car . Most of your driving is on the bitumen
the jeep is very nice to drive on the road but it,s not a hard core 4x4 although very capable . They do tend to get a bit hot when your driving in soft sand for prolonged periods but what fourby doesn't? I have had it for a cupla years now and no failures ..saying that the rear diff is a bit noisy so i am getting that done soon.Jeeps do chew front brakes.Parts are not as expensive as you would expect .A oil air and fuel filter cost me about 70 bucks from jeep. I sell parts for toyota and the same cost you about 150... The other good thing about Jeeps is that the panels are galvinized so no rust.
For the price i reckon it's good value i bought it second hand in emaculate condition for 10g's the same money for a toyota or nissan you get a **** box with no comforts like electric windows air bags etc etc..
So thats my jeep experience good luck with it

No he is not Paul but he does work for a big 4x4 accessories mob and also train people in 4x4 driving so knows his stuff.
Forgot the one big plus like Stribo said is the galv panels

PS: yes lower pressure but NO to wider wheeels... fatties push too much sand in front of them. Standard width tyres, and down to 18psi to start with ... the tyres bag out and increase footprint lengthwise much more than they do laterally.

Yeah, it is a bit of a misconception that fatter tyres will help you on sand.

It is much better to go for taller tyres.

Fat tyres increase the surface area (laterally), but as Mark said, it also pushes more sand. You are much better off going for taller tyres which also give more surface area (lengthwise), but also reduce the angle of attack between the tyre and the sand, hence pushing less sand.

Another thing that makes fat tyres worse than standard tyres is that fat tyres are heavier(bigger tyre, bigger rim). Increasing your un-sprung mass just makes it easier to get bogged as the wheels lose traction more often.

My mate had one. It's a pretty primitive and uncomfortable car. Very basic inside, noisy engine, very heavy on fuel unless u go for the diesel. They're good off-road, but if you're not going off-road every weekend I'd give it a miss, especially if you have to do any long road trips in it.

G'day mate,

Jeeps will always have an excellent rep when off roading.

Most off road vehicles are quite capable if the DRIVER has a clue, here in lies the problem, if you dont understand the different terrain then you cant adjsut your driving style to suit.

The Older Jeeps are well known for being right up there and there are 101 mods you can get off the shelf, here is the down side, They are designed in America and tend to have many little annoying things that always seem to get in the way,and cost money.

My jeep is 22 years old and has a 5.9 ltr V8 on LPG and unleaded (Dual fuel), when I run LPG life is good and cheep but when I switch to petrol I have gobbs of power that only 6.5 turbo deisle chev can match but it costs me heaps, so I run Mr Magoo style on LPG.

The newer Jeeps are better but they lack the finishing off and dont instil confidence in me, Plus the wranglers are great fun but usless (Very popular in all terrain), what can you put in the back, a dog!!! Ya cant sail a dog So too impractable for mine.

Nissan patrols are the best built drive train, you can put a diff lock in a Toyota 100 series and shatter the crown gear, however the Patrols are engineered on more of a truck driveline, if you put relly big wheels on you will snap uni joints not the axle. Yes they are big but from my experience (Worked at ARB) they are the peoples choice.

BUT PLEASE GET WHAT YOU WANT, at the end of the day you must be happy with your decission, if you get a brand new one the warranty will cover a lot.

Personal choice from someone else sux So that was my opinion and a wrong in other peoples eyes, possibly.

However at the end of the day I pay 50-60cents per liter for LPG and I dont like spending lots of mony on depreciating assets.

That reminds me, the bloody tail gate window switch sh1t itslef last night and now I have to get my board in through the drivers side door These are the things that sh1t me about Jeeps and the cost($150.00) for a new switch Baaaaahumbuggg!

Good luck with your choice

Regards GT

My wife bought an 06 Wrangler Renegade and paid $37k with all options.

18 months later and only 20,000km on the clock we were lucky to sell it for $23k

jeeps suck. Got a Hilux now. They hold their value better.

Funny. I used to sell Jeeps when they were with American Motors. I agree.

More amusement. My Brother in Law just bought a new one. Again, I agree with your post. Actually, only 13% of wranglers ever leave pavement. 4 wheel drive isn't much better than front for snow which is what most people buy it for in North America. Nevertheless, I'm thinking of getting a used Cherokee for my next beach vehicle.
