im dont know if its me or has the surf in perth just got extremely ring...
leighton in winter was always rideable 10-15 yrs ago, id get endless winter fun there, now there absolutely nothin... same with swanbourne, swannys used to be fun as, now if u mentioned swanbourne people would laugh, places like cables b4 the reef came along used to go off and the southern side of city beach groin is just a shore lapper, they used to run comps ther... places like mandurah cranked bak in the day, secret harbour was surf beach, tday its packed and straight, its all ****ked, crowds flok rotto and the SW now, all in hunt for sum sort of rideable wave. anyone got any sik pics of these local spots firing sumtime ago? throw em up!

Yeah it sucks to be a surfer in Perth.

Luckily Bali is close, Margs even closer. Secrets is the only thing keeping me sane.

have to agree

housing developments stopping natural sand drift to form good banks has screwed scarbs and mandurah / surf beach

along with the run of super mild winters we have had since the late nineties - which means less chance to stir up the banks

My first winter here in 88 i windsurfed about 40 days through winter . Now we are lucky to get 10 good days of sailing in a winter

its a shame because 1.5 - 2m swell in perth and good banks equals nice (if not huge) waves

If Hillarys Marina want there the sand flow would still keep the banks good along the coast. We have no sand flow from the north now. Toms used to have a right hander when the sand got in there but hasnt worked since the marina went in.

I think you're right Doggie...

I remember when 1st Reef at Waterman's bay was a real alternative to Trigg... now it's worse than average at best... I've only paddled out once in the last 15yrs.

Trigg point used to have an inside shoulder high reform where all the grommets paid their dues (me included).

Just depressing. I've been out of action since Oct last year, but have kept an eye on the surf - don't think I've missed too many good local days... The last two weekends at Trigg have been rediculously (and dangerously) crowded.

Spot on GPA, I used to surf Watermans all the time when I was younger. Not even a wave there now

Worrier - I clearly remember one particular run of swell at Trigg that after 5 days straight of surfing my arse off I actually gave it a miss on day 6 as I was worn out... hasn't been like that for over 20yrs... nowadays you'd be lucky if a run of swell/shape lasted more than 2 days... and even then it'd be like ants on cake!!

Those were the days you could go to the Spot or Derrs and be the first in the water at 7:30am... not any more.

I remember getting the LH Torana bogged on the run into Surf beach... never got it classic, but always some shape & zero crowds...

Yeah that is Trigg Point - before they fancied the carpark up... I used to like being parked facing the break - sitting on the bonnet eating a pie whilst watching the surf...

In many ways it is better - more cosmopolitan, shops, restaraunts, cafe's, trains and tourism precints such as Hillarys and Fremantle...etc

Unfortunately, along with the growth comes the traffic congestion - on the roads and in the surf!!

I was thinking that, the food used to be average...pretty dead besides local Taverns.

But you could camp at injy's, thrash the Laser to get to the Spot, prawning on the river...crabbing in Mandurah?

Yeah good and bad...

Has anyone got photos of this fantastic surf we used to get?

Think the banks used to be slightly better; but that is due to the storms moving south, so we get no wind in winter now to stir them up a bit. Swell was always sh1t.

We USED to stay there all the time when it was Canal Rocks holiday park resort... a year ago we jagged a great deal and spent 3 nights there at the back in the beach Shacks - which were well equipped and just fine for a family of four if you were going to be out and about most of the time. The BBQ courtyard was maybe 3x4m fenced off - so no view of anything. Sit on the front porch and you are looking at a mirror image unit across a bitument road... to us the place was over priced and soul-less... my wife hated it.

Smiths beach had that great grassed camping ground. Now sterile buildings.

We've stayed many nights at Contos Campsite and always had a great time. But from now on it'll be swagging in the car and crossing fingers I don't get caught by some tosser ranger.
