Apparently two big sharks were seen in the river, south perth yesterday. Can anyone confirm this?
Don't want to sail on the river today if there is bull sharks swimming around....

Seen plenty of dolphins in the river ....... where there are dolphins ......

Just have to get better on the turns ..... better not sail at Cott either (6 years ago? this month), or at Safety Bay (all of those seals!). Scarborough? Numbers up it's up!

More likely that the river will kill you rather than shark.

Have to pity anything in that sick river at present.

A least there are no Bondi Cigars there ..... yet.

he he

Yep that's right Leski - It is safer to stay in the river than to venture out onto those nasty roads.

Don't take offence at these guys Drummond. I think what they mean is that sharks are around here all the time. Whether or not they get spotted is pretty meaningless. They live here.
There have been so few attacks you really are safer in the river/sea than going out on a saturday night to Northbridge.
If you are EVER lucky enough to even spot one chances are he's too full up on tourists to take any notice of you ;)

I'm frightened by the housewives driving almost anything, but especially SUV's. Bringing the kids here and there, shopping etc. ...they seem to own the roads and act like it too.

Radmac, just cause there are dolphins don't seem to mean alot. 1 of our most recent deaths was the young dude that was taken in Adelaide skurfing about a k or 2 out...from what he's mate's say dolphins were present moments before his life was taken.

yep I should have said

"Where there are dolphins ...... there are possibly sharks"

I am no expert, but gather that sharks also feed on the scraps left overs from dolphins feeding.

The point that I was trying to make was that dolphins are an "ocean animal" that comes into the Perth Estuary.

From what I can see there have been a couple of attacks in the Swan River . see http://www.auscyber.net/shark/casefile.html

Bull sharks (Swan River Whalers) have been caught in the river.

More risk on the roads in Perth as the other posts indicate. (or fishing off rocks!!!)

Sorry man, wasn't having ago at ya! I'm interested in shark's, they say keep your friends close and your enemies closer. I once thought that dolphins were like our little angel while in the ocean but recent history blows that out of the water.
Going back about 8 years ago I was holidaying in Foster (N.S.W) enjoying a peacefull early morining surf with just a couple of other's when a fin popped up right in front of us (All good was a dolphin). Mind you a sailboarder down in the bite had been taken without a trace of his remains 2 days prior.
The amount of attack's in Oz in the last 10 years I reckon would be higher than the 30 years prior to it. From all the doco's and stuff I have seen I think we are more at risk nowday's with aquaculture being cultivated so close to shore and not to mention diving with them.

seems that they've heard me

THOUSANDS of beachgoers in Sydney's east were evacuated twice today after a four metre-long bronze whaler shark was spotted close to shore.

Radmac... more than a couple, but the last was in 1973 and before that in 69, 68, 59(3 times!!), 55 and 23.
So it seems it has been 32 years since an attack in the river. Exactly the same time span between the first two.

lighning kills about one a year in Perth. the power boats are more of a danger

I'd be more worried about the smell coming out of the river. and that big f**k off blue whale that has washed up on Rotto isn't going to help the shark and smell situation.

Haha, I love that dolphin myth. The biggest preditor of dolphins (appart from humans in cans of tuna) is sharks.

Not many other things are big enough to eat em. That ramming thing, is just done in packs to protect babies. I am pretty sure most wild dolphins wouldnt think twice about saving your arse, (risk getting eaten by shark... to save silly human... i think not)

Work is slow today.

PS. best way to get over your fear of sharks is to go swimming with them. If u see them in the wild while diving, most will check u out then swim away. (mind you I have never seen a great white while swimming, and dont really want to)

cage diving is the reason sharks are coming for a taste. the shark smells food but cant get to the person so when it comes across a diver it thinks they smell good i wonder what thy taste like.

sharks migrate between aus and s africa all the time and s.a. is were they are cage diving.

There is no date to be sure that the white population migrate all the way to SA...more research is needed in that area.

There are more realistic theories than cage diving, such as present tuna fishing methods for one ie netting whole migrating populations of young tuna then bringing them inshore to be feed up to make the best $$$!
Just think of the volume of feed that is dropped into these nets every week compared to the small amount of food involved with cage diving!?
Then take into account the removal of the whites natural food source....then when they manage to track down where their missing food (-they have more of a right to it than us) they find it relatively close to shore....where we live....then we think there is a shark problem
