I found myself in a similar situation. Its not only the cost you need to consider, but the time it takes to get it repaired. I think the repair quote was around $400 - when a new pump with 12 month warranty was about $700. I went the new pump, as mine was 10+ years old anyway...

May pay to just shop around for a new pump.

Try a shop that sells irrigation equipment. Farmers are notoriously lousy tight wads so where ever they buy their pumps will have the best price.

Whats the problem with it? not pumping ran dry? ****ty plastic impellor probally melted ! Strip it down yourself if you cant fix it its a cat frisbee get a new one ! (get the same pump) so you can eventually build one out of bits!

Get a new multi speed pump. We have a new pool and have barely noticed the power increase. In QLD there is a rebate available. NSW??

I would do everything possible to sort out the problem yourself. Pull it apart, get rid of all the grime, give it a clean, research on google. Could be a simple problem. Anything new will cost an absolute fortune and will break in four years.

I've got two 'pool store' pumps that sprung hairline cracks in the same place this week - is this some weird coincidence.. or planned obsolescence ? When I noticed it, I put some electrical tape over it, but it didn't help. I took one of them apart today, to figure it out. The polyurethane plastic is really thick, I can't work out how they could possibly be leaking, but they are. Small pinhole sprays are coming out of both, in almost the same place. I'm going to sand the area and try some aralydite on the outside of it, but kind of think it will only be temporary. Was wondering about trying some epoxy and fibreglass to patch it but have really no idea if it will stick.

Anything to do with pools always cost a small fortune. When we got the pool built - about four years ago we got these fancy lights in it, they change color and do all these fancy transition effects. Two of them stopped working earlier this year and I went about pricing 3 new lights - I found out they cost $700 each. No way was I going to fork out over 2K for pool lights. So I went to this electronic shop to get them repaired, they couldn't help - useless. But surprisingly... I rang the aussie company who manufactured them, told them two had stopped working, They told me they would repair them for $300. I drove up to Springvale to drop them off and a week later they told me they were repaired. When I got there they gave me three brand new ones with even more transitions all for $300.

I also had a problem with my built in outdoor four burner bbq today. The automatic sparky thingo, that is powered by a 1.5v battery stopped working on all but one burner. After taking the beast apart I found the leads had melted and were not connected. With the help of my trusty soldering iron I managed to fix that problem, and gave myself a beer for sorting it out. The grime that came out of that bbq was absolutely disgusting.

no, but maybe if you didn't spend your evenings singing Khe Sanh, while doing bombs in the pool, it wouldn't break in the first place.

I didn't end up doing half of that today. I was too hungover from the night before to touch alcohol today. My wife woke me early - she does shift work - and said she wasn't interested in Pho, informed me the sparky thing on the bbq was broken. I ended up getting out of bed at midday feeling like crap and it was stinking hot, I looked at the surf cams - which was perfect - got a coffee, and then got stuck into the bbq. I did a couple of bombs in the pool, didn't fire up the music and only just opened a bottle of wine about an hour ago. I'm sitting in my jocks though writing this.

No Khe Sanh tonight, but with a work function starting in 12 hours, maybe I'll be all primed up take my shirt off there and sing it.
