Looking at getting a van soon and was interested in hearing some stories on other peoples experiences with different types vans. Im currently looking at a VW transporter or a toyota hiace. If anyone could shed some light on the pros and cons of different makes/models and also diesel, petrol and gas variants it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey kitingkook
I have a 2.5L petrol LWB VW transporter in perth I am keen to get rid of (just picked up a new subary outback).
might sound a bit bias but the vans with the engine in front of the driver give a much better ride than the older style van with the engine under the seat. I have not driven a hiace but my VW is bloody good to drive. I was driving from bunbury to perth at least 5 times a month in it and it is very comfortable on the long runs.
I wil post the info on my van in the kiting area.

I have a ford econovan maxi and it works good for me. I can definately vouch for transporters. Very nice to drive.

I'm about to get the vw after much research at all brands.
Own a golf, have owned a transporter and can't fault them plus
just a better rig all round. Gal panels and a 12year perforation warranty - can't beat that near the coast.
Going for a Turbo Diesel

We have a Merc Vito. It's Turbo diesel, goes well & is great on fuel. Comfy, fits all your kit and more. You only have to service every 20,000 km, and then its only been $140 each service. 1st tyre change was at 80,000km and we could of got more out of them, we just put on mag's.
A mate got the Ford at the same time and we are $$$$$ ahead on purchase price & ongoing expenses. He now selling up and changing over.
