Curac,

Noticed the latest, Cannon, 10 X optical zoom and image stabilizer technology has a waterproof housing and a tele doubler options, think the camera is in the $900 range, not sure about the housing or doubler.
I have an older A30, (but not waterproof) and love it, great software. versatile, easy to use etc.

Cheers

Hi Curac,
I use the Cannon A70 with a waterproof casing for work. It has proved very easy to use, and effective, with pretty good images. The whole set up came to about $900.
Apart from windsurfing with it(I film my pupils) I have also snorkled with it, and am waiting for a good day of sun and swell to take it surfing with me.You can also use it as a basic video camera.
For more professional images, would be good to contact Pedro, but i have had a couple of my shots used in Freesail.

Hi Curac,

I would totally recomend the Olympus C-740 / C-750

I picked up a genuine water housing for my camera ( C-750 ) and have used it for surf photos, dive photos and general photos and it has never let me down.

If you want printable images you need to go for a higher "megapixel "
camera...... I would suggest at least 5 mega pixels as a starting point. The camera's are evolving so fast so worth checking out all the brands but Olympus are really user friendly and have great features ( I should get a free camera out of this really.... no I don't work for Olympus )

It depends on how much you are willing to spend but you can go right up to 15 - 20 Mega pixels these days but you are looking at big bickies and then more for housings.

Hope that helps....

I suggest you go to Valentines Camera House in Fremantle,, speak to Luke or David..
Say Chad sent you, and I am sure they will look after you.
They do the whole Cannon range will all the casings, etc plus many other brands.

You can go to harvey norman to get the best price or you can go see luke or david if you want service and you want to deal with the people who own the shop, not run the shop

I picked up the Cannon Powershot s400 (IXUS 400) at Harris Technology for about $150 cheaper than all the other camera stores around perth ... and that was without bargaining ... was a little cheaper still when i bundled it with a Mermory card. I know Canon and Olympus cameras come with waterrproof housing accessories for most their cameras but i think its failry pricy like $200 - $400. Also check out www.buyquick.com ... they order from the net and proces are usually cheaper.

Like Simon,
I also have the Poweshot A70. Great camera and 3.2 Megapix will do A3 prints fine. After using the camera all season, I found the waterproof housing great. I feel the only downfall is the Optical Zoom. Get a camera with as much as possible. The Canon is ok with 3x, and you can get close with the housing, but a 10x would be much better.

yeah i really want something with like 10x optical zoom
cuase its too rare that you are in the right place at the right time.to get a close up shot of something cool when windsurfing..
and digital zoom sucks big ol wang. the S1 IS that i was looking at aparently has some fast zoom motor in it.. which would be perfect.. as slow zoom you would miss it..
but thats like 900 so i gots to save for a while..
i was thinking film camera.. but i don't kow how to develop and the total coast of ownership is a lot lower with digital.. yeah..

Curac, I also have the canon powershot A70, which I think has 3x Optical zoom and 10x Digital, problem being you need a tripod to get full use out of optical zoom (...as shaky old alcoholic hands of mine shudder too much to get a clear close-up of those topless sheilas at the beach... )

The thing to remember is that they chew through the batteries, so best to get a charger, then you need a bigger memory card, then a nice case, then you don't have much change from $900 when you go in to look at their $650 special.

The A70 got 9.5/10 in some digicam magazine test, where they oly deducted .5 due to the silly noises it makes (that can get a bit annoying).

Printing is made easy with late model printers (approx $500) - I use(should say My Wife uses) HP that has slots you can put your camera card straight into to print from. Paper can be pricey too, but beats paying what $15 to $20 for 24 exposures???

Getting gone!!!

Yeah that's the one I saw, Any body know just how effective the image stabiliser is??? Or is it too new?
As Kecksoff said with high zoom you normally need a tripod, this is a bit hard in the water!!!! If the stabiliser can double the zoom you can use without a tripod, it would have to be the choice.

i would imagine if it has a fast shutter or fast imaging.. or what ever it is on digital cameras.. that it wouldn't really be an issue.. you just get a smooth motion going.. and click off where you want

not sure if you saw it but mine is a canon a75. I'm stoked with the action shots. I.ve taken a couple of shots through binoculars and they came out unreal! Awkward though.

G'day Curac,
I brought the S1 IS last weekend for $810.00 at Harvey Norman. Tried it out last weekend and it takes great stills and video footage through out the zoom range. Hopefully I can get the other half to come down this summer to get some action action shots of me blasting at Safety Bay.

Cheers, Mick

I've got a Fuji S5000. 6 meg, 10x optical plus 2.2 digital, delivering 22x zoom. The digital zoom on this camera is nearly as good as optical. Also got the optional screw on 1.5x lens, delivering total 33x zoom, 15 of which is optical. Battery life is excellent - taken over 250 shots from one set of batteries.

Tripod is mandatory, and can't imagine how a waterproof cover could fit it. With such a large zoom however, I get good pictures from the beach in most locations. Can't fault the photos, and has a great feature where you hold down the button and it fires off 5 shots per second, capturing the sequence of a jump or gybe.

Price is $550 @ Harvey Normans, and Gerry Gibbs had the camera and lens for $600 on special.

Problem is, once you've got a camera you're on the beach and your mates are on the water, which sucks !

You can actually buy disposable water proof cameras for about $20, to have a play with. We used some in Maui, tied to a boom, went out to the reef and took turns taking shots of each other while sitting on the board. Even try to take shots while sailing but the viewfinder was too in accurate so mostly ended up missing half the shot. There were a few different brands, some were quite reasonable while others were crap, can't remember which was which. I'm just about to buy a waterproof casing for my Sony Cybershot, it's about $180. The casing fits the whole range of cybershots, from a fixed lens 2mp $200 job to 5mp 3x zoom number.

A very good resource for under water photo equipment is www.hydronalin.eu There you find information about a variety of digi cams that are available with waterproof housings.
