1. I've recently had some scary sessions where the kite
just seems to fold in mid air, in semi strong gusts??? First guess is the
bladder doesnt have enough air but ive had it checked by very experienced
kiters who say pressure is fine. Could it be that the pulleys are seizing up
on the bridle???
Anyone else experienced similar problems? 2. What line connection positions both at the bar
and the kite would be recommended for max kite speed, im 90 kg on a 142 slingshot.

Do you have the KPO limiter Knots on the bridle? (A short length of line with knots in both ends attached to the bridle about 105cm from the wingtip)

Are you De-powering the kite too much whilst jumping? This can cause excesive force to be sent towards the centre of the bridle/kite allowing the tips to flare, Which puts the kite out of shape.

Do you have too much back line on the kite causing it to stall? When stood on the beach or whilst stationry the back lines should feel a little on the loose side. Once you have forward speed/apparent wind the back lines will feel just right.

I agree with what smitty said. The only time I've every seen my sonics get out of shape was before I put the pulley limiters on. What used to happen was that the pulley would move too far to the center of the kite and the wing-tips wouldn't have enough bridle tension to stay in shape. The kite would briefly crack open and then back again. Is this what you are experiencing? Does your kite have the pulley limiters?

As for line settings, all the sonics like loose back lines. One of the tests for line lengths is to trim the bar all the way in and watch the kite. If it begins to fly backwards then trim in some center line. Adjust and retest. This test is only a guide though and I prefer to have the ability to stall out the kite sometimes.

Munter, Smitty, Can you explain the KPO limiter knots? I have an 11 and a 14 sonic. Are you referring to a knot tied in the line (ie. a section of the bridle) that the pulley runs along? If so, is there a recommended distance for the knot from the KPO?
My 11 has no knots.
Any advice would be appreciated.

The limiter knots on the 11m are 95cm from the wing tip.

They just stop the pulley travelling too far towards the centre of the kite which puts it out of shape. It was only the very first Sonic's that didn't come with these. If your kite has clear wear patches on the L.E you will have these knots in place. They are just a small piece of line with knots in both ends which reduce the movement on the pulley.

They are attatched to the bridal using a larks head knot. The pulley is kept on the wing tip side of these stoppers.

If you don't have them take a small piece of 3mm line about 3-4cm in length and tie a simple overhand knot in each end. Then attatch to the bridal at lenghts I mentioned. 105cm and 95cm from the wing tip.

I appreciate the replys guys but ..YES...i do have KPO limiter Knots ....and clear wear patches. Could it be that the pulley is getting caught (with a little seaweed) on the bridle knot which is located 70-80 mm from the leading edge??????

I don't fly sonics but my mate does. I've seen the sonics (06 and 07) do some pretty mad things when fully powered up and moving fast! it would seem that if you say have a crash and power up the kite whilst being underwater the extra drag of your body seems to really square up the LE of the kite from where the bridal meets the corner, this seems to make the middle of the LE a little flappy and causes it possible fold under and back so you LE is now facing backwards in the middle of the kite. looking at the bridal on a 14 the other day there is a knot on the inside of the pully (closest to center) that probalby stops the pully going to far, in turn it pulls the LE flat. don't worry about it, it means your powered up!!!!
