What happened to forecasts like S S/W 17-21 kts or S S/W 18-23 kts . Forecasts like these were regularly issued in years gone by. I would have thought , as technology improves, forecasts would become more accurate but we don't appear to be heading in that direction. J

Depending on the area included in the forecast, 15-25 might be correct:

15kn on Melville waters
25kn off Rotto

This is especially true with some trough activity.

In tassie that would be accurate minute to minute. 15 to 25 then back again rapidly. Winter especially. That's just how we roll!

BOM , I can remember a time when the forecasts were more precise with 5 knot margins, don't see much of that anymore. Could be that's just the wind pattern we're getting now, but something's changed , J

I know what your saying but I think bene has it spot on and by giving these 10 knot margins is actually more accurate as the variations between locals is probably close to 10knots.

The forecast does cover a large area.. I think with those old 5 knot margins you would always have to apply that to rottnest then adjust down for your local. How many times has bom forecast say 15-20 and it's been 17-18 at rotto and offshore at scarbs.

There's a handy page on bom "marine wind forecast" which shows whether the seabreeze may make it to the mainland or not. Very handy for planning on those marginal days
