Re: Old school/New school debate and the attempt by some to change kitesurfing into wakekiting.

When wakeboarders go out and get wet behind their boat, what's the average duration of their actual session......5 minutes, 10 mins, 15
Don't know?

When you compare this to surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing.......1 hour, 2 hrs, 3hr sessions.......big difference in approach hey.

Can wakeboarding legitimately be linked to the 'surfing' genre?

waveslave,
IMHO there is nothing that beats the feeling of freedom whilst surfing with no-one around on a lonley remote break. Peace, quiet you and the ocean alone, its pure soul.....Wakeboarding will never even come close.

Wakeboarding is just a workout for kiteboarding that's slightly more fun than going to the gym.

Meh thats BS, wakeboarding is wakeboarding and will never be anything like kiting, and kiting will only grow away from wakeboarding and off onto its own.
Its like saying inline skaters are trying to be the same as skateboarders because they both use ramps and rails to grind etc.
Though there are similarities, for most the two sports are quite different and i dont think that there are many people that could do both sports at a professional level, the same as not many professional kiters could do professional wakeboarding or vice versa.

couple of bites

But seriously, my personal preference is kiteboarding, so when I go wakeboarding I'm generally just considering it a workout that's a bit of fun. Quite agree with

even if you had to say the same thing twice in the same sentence. Yes they are different sports with some similarities. And in response to the original question, 'legitimately' I would say no, however you could possibly make the link that both things involve travelling over the water standing on a board. Apart from that, who's trying to link wakeboarding to surfing? KBM may be trying to link kiteboarding to wakeboarding, and you could better link kiteboarding to surfing than wakeboarding. Seems to me the issue is that there is developing a rift between those who like kitesurfing on flatwater and those who like kiteboarding in surf. Get over it people, they're both fun, and they both benefit from each other. And KBM is kak by the way, don't believe anything you read in it. Just look at the pretty pictures.

Rant over. Want some wind and water. And to get out of the bl__dy office.

I gave wakeboarding a go a couple of times. Its fun but definately a major workout. Those guys that do it regular would have to be super fit,but i`d say that even for them 20 mins would be max??Waveslave you must be getting bored down there starting threads like this.I would have thought you would have options for kiting these winds?maybe need a bigger kite??

Hey Waveslave,

was hanging for the easterlies this morning, but they didn't come So went out for a wake with a few others on the ocean instead. Flat conditions, only 1 other boat...perfect

4 hours of board practice, all up about 50 mins wakeboaring each

Better than sitting at the beach waiting for the wind, or watching them red arrows

Now, how can I work a Mother's day outing around taking the boat out

Aha! I just realised why wakeboarding comparisons and wake-style moves are encouraged by kiteboarder magazine etc...

Lotsa' kiddies have heard of wakeboarding, and wakeboarding involves having a big engined boat (money) plus a bit of thrillseeking. Most of affluent North America has no waves, nor seabreeze, just lakes (poor bugggers). For selling kites in N.America, you'd be silly not to entice moneyed, thrillseeking boyz by using wakeboard-type thinking.

So to all those in Oz who quietly aspire to soulkite, be nice and forgiving to the hardcore mentality that could bring us such things as...
"My kite generates 55 HP in 10 knots of wind, how 'bout yours?"
and...
"KBM's feature article: Low-wind ways to get pulled! Helicopter vs. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Which is best?"

(Actually, these ideas aren't a silly as I 1st thought :-)

No man, it's like most other things, just a fitness level for a different group of muscles. OK maybe 20min max for a single run, but then all you need is a short breather and a stretch before you can get back into it and keep going. When I went out on Sunday I did a dock start, stayed dry for my first lap and when I did go in the water I was bloody freezing because I hadn't warmed up at all, even in riding. Then I pulled a muscle on a handlepass later on for the same reason.

We just had a cable ski park open here in Cairns, which has given all riders a light wind option without having to suck up to the moneyed riders with boats. Great to practice tricks going out on the kiteboard, but nowhere near as entertaining as getting out in the real ocean with a real kite, real swells and real wind.

Most wakers would do 2-5 laps/circuits (10-30mins) of their local course because: a)they are sharing the boat with 2-6 (sometimes more)other people and any more water time would deem them greedy - as GreenPat points out, their time will come around again... & b) they wake without the luxury of a harness - ever tried skiing or waking 'slave? Big workout, but you get another shot later when you can feel your arms again...

Why link it to the bloody surfing genre? Dunno if I'd link kiting to surfing genre either. I reckon Windsurfing is much closer... Probably skiing is closer to waking, with skurfing next to that.

Generally Wakeboarding is the prefered sport of the crew who are more than 30min/1Hr from the coast and have a lake/dam nearby, so I reckon it is horses for courses and whatever gets you on the water is good - comes back to "live and let live" I reckon 'slave. Most of these guys do not have the luxury of wind to power a kite, and geez, how much fun it is shredding a wake on a perfectly flat glassy lake on a boat with a big full esky and 2-10 of your mates???!!!!

My wife too wants us to buy a wakeboat Hunglong. We looked at a couple of V8 Skicrafts and they were absolute bloody beasts! I think she reckons at least the family will be together on the non-windy days!!!

Don't knock what you're not into. There's a whole big fat world out there 'slave, with plenty of room for everyone to enjoy!!!
