I'm thinking about a 17m Slingshot (to complement my existing 12m Naish Torch) and was wondering whether that might be too big for someone of my weight. I'd imagine it would be great in light winds, but I'm just worried that it might become very dangerous in a small gust. I was thinking of getting a 15m instead. Any thoughts about kite size ranges for someone of my weight?

I reckon the 17 is too big
go a 15
I weigh 85 and
do ride a 17 and a 15 and my mate rides 15 when its light and he goes well

if you want a 15 fuel I have a good used 05 or a new one i can do a killer deal

i disagree - it might just be your really light wind kite.

I would go a 15m fuel rather than a 17m, for you being 7okg you would be over powered at 16-17 knots, just when it starts to get fun. The 15m is a great kite, you always know where it is and you can practice all your tricks on it before trying them on the 12m and getting punished.

konkers - Choosing between the 15 and 17m really depends on what wind range you get where you live. If you average between 12 and 17 knots, and you are 70 kgs, I would go for the 17m, as I am now 52 kgs and on a 16m Naish am perfectly powered between 12 and 15 knots, and slightly overpowered in 15 and 16 knots.

However, if you average 16-23 knots, I would go for the 15m definately. I am powered on my 12m Naish in 16-18 knots easily, or just as well on my 10m Cab ele in 16-23 knots.

Anything above a maximum of 17/19 knots and gusting even higher, the 17m would be un-useable. The 15m is nearly a good all 'round weather kite from 16 knots onwards That's what I've found at least

If interested I have a 17sqm FUEL for sale (as new with bar/lines etc) that you could use for a while to try out - that way you can actually get on the water and give it a go in different conditions as opposed to guessing.

Give me a call on 0404795731 - James.

Quite happy for you to try for while.

Sorry for the late reply guys - thanks for all your opinions. I guess what I'm looking for is a light wind kite, but just think a 5m difference between the 12m and 17m is too big. I'll give it a think.

Cheers

Ive gone through 2 large kites and wont never buy another one.

I think that big kites are made for big people. I found that there is such a small wind range for big kites when used by the lighter kiters. One little gust means one big enema. For light winds I now just use my surfboard and a 12.

Each to their own though. Have a fly and see what suits you!

11M & 15M fuels are perfect crossover for 70kgs
People reckon 11M Fuel = 12M others ????
So I'd say go the 15M for crossover
BUT @ 70kgs you need 12kts before you can really say you're kiting.
ie holding ground etc.
& I agree the 17M fuel is difficult to handle & enjoy for a 70kg rider.

I agree with the small wind range, being 65kg and flying a 17mtr Cabrinha CO2.I find 12 to 15 knots to be about the range for me riding a 137 twintip.Over 15 knots I'm looking for a smaller kite, under 12 I'm looking for my skimboard. You will use a 17mtr,but,how often? Go a 15 unless it's light wind cruising you are into.I think you would be alot happier and get more use out of a 15 in the end.
