4 seasons of kiting now, and although I'm an old codger that just cruises I experienced my first death loop on land yesterday through my own stupid inattentiveness.
In 2 seconds I went from the satisfaction of a good session to having my head smashed into a sand dune and lining up for a full body slam into the next dune before I got to my quick release.
If I didn't have that stupid looking helmet on I would have been knocked unconscious, and if I hadn't kept the Cabrinha safety leash on my harness when I went back to Waroos , I doubt that I could have activated the quick release that quick.
The Cabrinha is a big fat release that you can find even in deep ****, make sure your release works in a flash and you know how to instinctively use it- you have no idea how much power there is in a death loop in 25+ knot winds till you experience it.

Wow, lucky you are all ok. What happened? Did a line snap?
I do like the cabrinha safety leash. Very simple and easy to find/use.
Ps, do kite helmets make much difference to impacts like that. I thought they were more board or a stick etc. They arent very thick, and wouldnt have much energy absorbtion. Hard to tell if helmet stopped unconsciousness. (just me pondering)

Hi Dawn Patrol,

A good quality helmet will protect you. A Gath helmet is for bumps and fin cuts and says so on the little label in the helmet. A helmet such as a Pro-Tec Ace Wake will protect you from pretty heavy impacts by way of the dual density moulded EVA foam padding and the hard shell.

Take a look at these kiteboardingschool.com.au/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=66&category_id=20&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=84

These helmets are lightweight, are designed to drain quickly and meet Australian and European Helmet standards.

Sounds like a good learning experience Supra. Complacency can lead to a nasty incident. At least you had some safety gear on, had a good quality safety release and were instinctive enough to use it.

Mend well,

Might not have knocked me unconcsious , but probably made it harder to get to the quick release. I tried a few kite helmets , but couldn't find one that was comfortable or stayed in place under a wave, till I tried a bike helmet. With the strap done up tight it works real well and I hardly notice it's there- apart from looking pretty stupid, but who cares - I'll never kite without a helmet.

skateboarding/bmx helmets are alot comfier than the water type helmets and are totaly useable in the water if you dont mind the sponge inside getting a bit wet.

Crikey - I value safety over fashion any day but you must look like a total Gumby Supra!!! Admirable sense of self preservation in the face of inevitable humiliation... Noice one mate

Try out a ProTec. I had a standard Gath (till it got ripped off after an unintentional kiteloop) but I reckon the ProTec would save ya grey matter far better and they are about as comfy as I have tried on (including the Gath Gedi) cheaper too. You could always wear it onya bike down to the shops too!! Unless you are going in the 'special bus'.
