At this stage the 2005 Rottnest Kite Surf Classic is planned to be held on the weekend of 22/23 Jan as a lead-up to and possibly the race component of the Australian National Kite Surfing Championships.

The WAKSA committee have decided that next year the wave event will be held at another venue and we will just do the race across on Saturday with a weather hold over plan to race back on the Sunday – maybe even race both ways if we can get the safety craft for both days.

We will once again need a team of volunteers to bring this event together as part of the Nationals. One of the disappointments of running the last event was the lack of volunteers from within the WA kite surfing community – there were many things that we wanted to do but didn't get the volunteers for :-(

If you don’t want to compete then please consider helping out. If you do want to compete please get your family and/or friends to help out. Consider putting back a little into this great sport of ours.

The first team that we need to put together is marketing/ media liaison to secure sponsorship and ensure that sponsors expectations are met. This job will cover both the Rotto Classic as well as the Nats. If you have any expertise or know of any potential volunteers that can help in this area please let us know [email protected] or call me on 0414 716 812 for more details.

Good news for those competitors who missed out on racing across this year! DPI and the Fremantle Port Authority have finally approved further race trials to continue up until 30 April 04 under the following conditions:

o Only registered competitors in the 2004 Rottnest Kite Surf Classic are permitted to conduct the trials.

o The trials will consist of 4-5 kite surfers max and at least one safety vessel capable of recovering all participants legally.

o Trials are to be suspended and participants recovered if, for any reason the safety of participants or vessels are at risk.

o All intended trials to be notified to WAKSA ([email protected]) at least 7 days prior.

o Trial participants MUST be a current financial member of WAKSA or AKSA incl $10M public liability insurance.

o All competitors are briefed that commercial and naval shipping always has priority; kite surfers or safety craft must not impede the safe passage of shipping or cause the perception that a close quarters situation is developing.

o By proceeding with any activity associated with the Rottnest Kite Surf Classic (including trial runs), all participants acknowledge WAKSA committee members, any event volunteers or officials, DPI Marine Operations, the City of Fremantle, the Fremantle Port Authority and the Rottnest Island Authority shall be indemnified against any loss, costs or damages of whatever kind.

o DPI Marine Operations must be contacted on 9239 2400 immediately before leaving Port Beach AND upon arrival at Natural Jetty Rottnest Island.

o PFD1 2 or 3 and flare must be worn by all riders when more than 400m offshore.

o All legal requirements of the Rottnest Island Authority and DPI are to be met.

o All participants are to provide a written report (email is OK) to WAKSA within 7 days of completing a trial run.

The route for the trials is unchanged:

o Start @ Port Beach 32o 2.129S 115 o 44.694E
o 1st Mark (floating red buoy) 32 o 1.891S 115 o 44.224E
o 2nd Mark (Hall Bank channel marker) 32 o 1.853S 115 o 42.743E
