This is more of a warning post than a sob story but i just wanted to warn all beginners to be very careful when buying 2nd hand gear. I bought a second hand kite a couple of weeks ago. Thought it was a bargain at $500 but have yet to really get it in the air due to high pressure leaks in the leading edge and uneven lines.

I had to spend another $200 on it to get a quick release/depowering system that actually works. So i spent $700 on a kite with bladder cancer and worn/stretched lines, a couple of hundred more and i could have bought a new ex model kite. Wish i had!

At least i have learnt what to look for in 2nd hand kites though.

bummer man, I bought a second hand kite this week and it is great.. I had the guy inflate it for me before buying and checked out the bar/lines etc..

Hope it's all good now that it's fixed

What I tried to get across in my post, was that not all second hand kites are crap, and that it is a good way to get started with a limited budget.

That is the beauty of buying from a shop most shops around the place saftey check the bar and lines and fit appropriate saftey releases ect. Most of them also check bladders and kites over. Also buying from a shop you aren't getting dodgey kites flogged off to you. You will get quality advice. Shops have reputation to uphold. Cheers Killer

Lucky you got a bum deal with a 2nd hand kite. I got sold a crap kite from a shop in scarbs. Two years ago when I bought my first kite, I was sold a 7.5m with a huge board costing all up $2600. Since I way 95kg, it would have been obvious to the guy that sold it to me that the kite was clearly too small. Never have I been able to keep my ground with the kite. (not due to lack of talent)

Advice to beginners --> Buy 2nd hand and save your $$$ until you really know what you are paying for.
