Bought an xcel 4/3 steamer for winter. Used it yesterday for the first time and found I had to stop kiting 4 times in 1hr to let a LOT of water out of each leg....soo much in fact that it had filled up both legs completely and was making kiting quite difficult. Has anyone had this problem?? Any advice to avoid this??
Cheers.

Is it coming up the legs or in through the top?

If its coming up the legs, then normally you can just put some velcro strips around it to tighten it, most kiting wetsuits come with these on the legs for this exact reason. The alternative is to wear booties and use the ties on the booties over your bottom of your wetsuit.

um, possibly it's too big for you. wetsuits require a tricky balance between water-excluding snugness and movement-preventing tightness.

that's just one of the reasons why one-size-fits-all kitepants are so rad. hot and cool at the same time, and just quietly i've heard that some kitepant manufacturers are researching a kite-top for the extra cold days. don't be fooled, to the untrained eye this may look like a kmart tracksuit, but do they come in one-size-fits-all? no they don't, therefore kitepants and top are something entirely different: kiting-specific performance wear.

just my 2c, kitepants aren't for everyone, good luck resolving your water retention.

1st thing that comes to mind is it's too big. Are the neck, cuffs and ankles snug?

How was it on the water yesterday - wind OK? I couldn't make it out.

Hi Wazza,

Just put either velcro or insulation tape around the ankles, problem solved! It's probably a surfing suit, they don't have the issue of water spraying up the leg from the board so don't have any need to rectify the issue.

Kiteboarding specific wetties have this sorted.

Good winds,

I have had the same problem (if you can call it that) I get it two ways:

1. The high pressure spray up the leg from the board edge
2. Water running down the suit and getting trapped at the ankle. Say after stacking and having water enter in through the neck whilst body dragging back to your board.

You will be riding for a while and over time you get big cankles. I think taping the cuff while stopping the spray coming up also stops the water coming out as it drains under gravity through the suit.

I have seen guys cut a slit about 2 inches long in the cuff to help drainage, but I just reach down with one hand and stretch the cuff for a second while I am riding. That gets rid of the water.

It's caused by the water jetting up your leg and the cuff turning inwards making a seal. Modern soft, super stretchy suits are easily pushed around by the water.

You can fix it by using tape or a velcro band around your ankles. That can be a pain at the end of a session. There's nothing worse than having your wettie down around your ankles and finding you've forgotten to remove the tape.

The best solution in winter is to wear booties with your wettie legs tucked into the boots. You stay nice and warm and don't get water up your leg.

You can reduce the effect by rolling the leg of your suit up a little on the outside of the leg. That allows the water to drain out but it will eventually unroll and you'll be back to square one. You still get water jetting up your leg and that will make you cold.

I've read about guys running a bead of polyurethane glue around the ankle leaving a gap at the back of 30-50mm. The idea is that it stiffens the ankle but it will still stretch to get your foot in. I've never tried it. I just wear booties in winter.

I wouldn't recommend running glue around your ankle if you have hairy legs. It would be a bugger to remove

I had the same issue. I now use a stirp on double sided velcro around the ankles.

Problem solved.

ION Kite specific wetsuits....

Solved the problem well and truely no more GUMBY legs for me !

Ps:I was a little sceptical at first ( being a Rip Curl wearer for the last 15years ) I would say the warmth is on par with the E-Bomb even without half the leg.
They are actually great wetties....mine is a 4/3mm, and I was using it all winter last year here in Vic so they are easily warm enough for most part of Aus. On top of that check out the prices in most cases you are looking at less than $300 compared to the 600 - 800 for my E & F BOmbs when new !!

Caution : If you surf as well the ION is perhaps not the best suit as the arms of the wettie are not really designed to have as much flex ( in the shoulder ) as the surf specific ones ......and the padding around the ribs etc... is more designed with the kite harness in mind.

so all in all great for kiting not so good for surfing ...

of all the wetties I would say this one looks the best with the boardies over the top because it looks like you are only wearing a wettie top...which makes you seem ultra hard core in winter and everyone at the beach will give you loads of respect and think you are awesome and mad.

I had exactly the same problem.

Was a bit scared to cut my new wettie, but i cut a small hole (3mm diameter) with scissors about 1 inch up from the bottom of each leg. Water just drains out the holes.

Works perfect.

If you find too much (warm) water leaking out of the legs how about you stop pissing in your wetsuit?

Pissing in a sealed seam winter wetsuit is definitely not recommended. They don't flush through so you'll end up bathing in a stinking pool of cold piss.

I was told by RPS that the Ions generally sold at around $500-$600.
