Yeah we were just stirring kiters

So hope you all took it in jest

Bman - do you mean a foil kite or a hydro-foil to strap to a windsurfing board?

Hydrofoils I think are slower then the planing flats on our boards (well there is a few youtube vids of normal boards hooning past hydro ones at least)

We'll race you to 10000 pics (real pics not crap), shall we (or will this just decrease the quality of the forum/pics)?

instead of a ANOTHER general slagoff/friendly banter post between sailors and kiters, I think it would be interesting to hear from bonafide accomplished persons who can sailboard and kite and get their opinion on the level of skill required for both sports.

Seeing as though you asked: i only Wsurf but i know a few people who do both. They state kitesurfing is easier.... waaay easier

Doesn't make kitesurfing any less fun does it?

Like Skiing and Snowboarding. Skiing is harder, snowboarding is easier but the progression on a snowboard in the early stages is steeper. I think some parallels can be drawn there.

It's true that a lot of kiting pics have an element of sameness. Looking at someone dangling, it is impossible to tell what they were doing during their move. That's why so many magazines have the photos with multiple frames superimposed, so you can actually see and respect what is going on.

I know when I've been out taking photos, most of them look the same. Can usually get a couple of special pics though

The real exception is kiting in the waves. Most of those shots still give me wood

But I think the same applies to windsurfing. And their wave shots are just amazing

I've certainly lost interest in the "my sport is better than your sport" stuff.

(although kiting is clearly better. Just because )

I kite and windsurf, and never cease to be amazed at the "my dicks bigger than yours" banter that either side feels they need to enter into.
I get a **** load of enjoymeny out of either, both sports can look lame when watching a beginner or a kook, but watch a competent player and and you can appreciate how awesome both sports are.
Windsurfing does have a longer learning time in comparison, however once at a comptenet level both have many very technically challenging moves.
Its obvious that proponents of either camp are very selective in picking the vid or pic which best highlights their preference or derides the other. This is just being a wanker, check out Lenten, Pivec, Polakow, Kauli etc, and tell me honestly what these boys do doesn't give you a hard on.

"Why is it that half of us here come from windsurfing, only never to go back due to the lack of freedom, air, speed, and manouverability that a windsurfer offers. Dont you get it? Windsuring is oldschool mate. All these needs can now be achieved with a kite, half the price, and one tenth the garage space".

These type of comments come from what i am certain was a piss poor windsurfer, wrong, wrong, wrong and wrong....you definately should have got lessons buddy. Nothing is old school about a big arsed backie or forward or a cranking bottom turn to aerial of the lip, just as a dirty fat boost, kite loop certainly aint "lame tea bagging".

Ath the end of the day its about what YOU get out of it, if YOU like it, and it makes YOU feel good then screw everbody else. How good it looks depends on what YOU put into it.
If you need to put **** on either i suspect you aint going hard enough. Try putting more time into moves instead of watching what the other team is or isnt doing.

Its all about the juice.

Peace

Can I just ask - When I pass a windsurfer out the back and throw up a friendly wave and a smile can you at least nod and smile in reply. All I get is a deadly stare.

Don't worry, I'm not going to cut you in half with my "strings". Kiters manage to pass each quite close without crossing lines.

Dont see people many queing up to start windsurfing, traditional winsurfing shops generally stock and sell more kites these days .... in fact a few more years and it maybe just the oldsalts still doing it....
Wakeup poledancers your sport is in its final death throes.... rigamortis is setting in ( probably with a few of you as well ).
Less people wind surfing and more people kiting means less money for windsurfing related research and development means the sport stagnates in its progression before dwindling away into obscurity and folklore.....eventually the only place to buy a windsurfer will be at garage sales or antique shops.....Enjoy it while it lasts oldtimers then move aside quietly and swiftly ....

I got a good reel of braid, quality leader and hooks.......

Ah guys as someone in this thread said, you really have to have done both to appreciate the other. Having pole danced for 25 years and kited for about 6 let me say this......

1..To actually achieve a competent level of pole dancing takes about 10 times longer than it does with kiting but the rush is there at every step along the way.

2..As with kiting every sailor looks for something different, i.e. speed, wave sailing, course racing, one design etc. just like wake style, big air boosting and surf for kiting.

3..Having pole danced for so many years it gets harder to get the next big rush, waves and big wind becoming the only fix, enter kitboarding!! Now getting that rush from kiting about 4 to 5 times a week (only pole dancing about 4 to 5 times a year!)

4..Travelling with kiting gear totally kills travelling with a sail board especially overseas!!!!!

Sorry guys but the conclusion is kite boarding first, sailboarding second, but you have to respect both sports!! remember Felix Perevic was a pole dancer before he took up kiting!!

Colinwill78 - thats old school moves in like 5knots (not normal windsurfing or kiting winds), skills but not many people do those sorta moves. A kite would be useless for those winds, so thats better then sitting on the tv and doing nothing.

Harry Potter - not all windsurfers are old and many newbies are joining (just like kiting) - I for one am younger then most kiters (at a guess) and started 1yr ago

Uncledoug - Spot on, well said. (apart from the bit where you missed that most of this thread was stirring jokes aimed at the other sport, others took it seriously)

Seriously though, we should start a day where competent windsurfers and kiters share their sport with eachother to build a common bond and concensus and cut the crap and understand a bit about the other sport to minimise real issues

One happy wind-loving family
