Has anyone out there converted their old 4 line set-up into a 5 line set-up? And if so, did you notice any kite performance changes?

I created a system on saturday and tested 4 metre kite and then on sunday put it on a 14 metre kite. My gut feeling is better stability on the 14 metre... I had one line for the LE for 10 metres from the bar then dividing into two for another 10 metres to the LE. But the wind was so light yesterday in Rockingham I couldn't give it the amount of testing as I would have liked.

It is certaily very easy to update a your existing set-up with a 5th line...

I have 2 kites that I have added a 5th line to. KiteMagic in Coogee did a professional job of unstiching the seams of the leading edge, adding the connections points with reinforcements and then resewing the leading edge back together with triple stitching all in an hour while I waited. He also added webbing to my depower strap on two of my bars so that I could add a guide ring. All for 35 dollars (could not belive it). I then got a clamcleat and extra line so that I can trim the fifthline as I am flying to adjust the power. For one kite I add the fithline to help with relaunch as it is a 20m and when it hits the water it is hard to get it on its back, now that is easy-as. The other kite is a 15m and was starting to Jellyfish. I have only flown it once now with the 5th line but it seems to have stabilized the kite alot. Even with the gusts the kite kept its shape. I need to do more testing to be sure that it has resolved the problem but am very happy. Sad part is that I bought a new 15m Fuel a couple of months ago as a replacement to the wobbly one and it now looks like i am going to have two 15m each with pro and cons over the other.

By the way, the guide ring and a stoping ball on the line is important if you do not run the line through the bar. With the ring, you can release the bar and it will slide down to the ball. You can pull the fifth line in till the bar is back in your hand and then let the kite float away from you till it is all set to launch.

Thanks for that feedback Not on The Board!

With your LE lines... did you change these to one line coming from the bar then dividing into two lines to connect to the LE? Because I think it is this that helps improve kite stability?? And you are spot on re the stop on the 5th line... makes life much easier!

hey Robbo... its pretty easy to do... you should try yourself... otherwise Im sure any shop or repairer could do for you... mind you no doubt they will try and sell you a new kite first! maybe SOS or the kite doctor would be worth asking??

Hey Andrew, I used a center point attachment as I did not want to deal with having to figure the lengths for two seperate lines on two kites. Hurrah did go the 'Y' method and seems happy with it but then he sold that kite off so I guess somebody else is enjoying it.

Bye the the way Hurrah, please do not shorten my name to NoB that just does not sound complimentary.

Sorry Not on Board.

I was just following the method used by the post above mine.

No you're not a NOB at all.

Hey have fun in Cairns you lucky bastard

Andrew,

The Y method is heaps better because it distributes the load evenly on the LE. It also serves to stabilise the LE evenly so that you can depower better IMO. I did it to a 16 Rhino and did so succesfully. It works really well.

I didn't go to the hassle of using a cleat like Not on Board but used a bungy cord.

Just to clarify though, the y was a briddle of 1.5m in lengthon the LE and therefore you will still have 2 long steering lines and one fifth line.
I did this because I did not want to stuff around with cutting up lines for a 5th line as well as it was easier to find a sleaved line at a certain length than to make one up.

I have an 8.5 matrix with cls that I use in my school and it is fantastic, so much was I impressed by the cls system I tried to convert my airblast 10 to the system.

result was a vastly reduced wind range and steering speed.
when in the middle of its wind range every thing was normal but either side crap.

this was due to the shorter two front lines ie; distance from kite to front line junction, or maybe steering line/front line ratio.

went back to original and loved it all over again.

some 5th line points.
1. two kite attachments
2. a passive system is best
3. reinforce trailing edge, as line will cut when kite rolls back.
4. there is a sudden and strong jerk when activating so make sure leash attachment is strong.

best winds
