hey, i just got a slingshot 9m and i weigh about 55kg. i want to use it in stronger winds so i wanted to put a 5th line on it so i dont kill myself. but i heard that the 5th line can tear your kite in half if a wave hits it. is this a thing that happens a lot to kiters or should i not worry about it too much? thanks

u cant beat the simplicity of 4lines but 5th is basically a safety necessity-o and what the f~k happened to the wind--sik 1 bom

a front line safety 4 line is fine, but if it gets too hairy and/or ugly you are usually swimming back in.

5th line is much better, depower when in trouble & relaunch - except that they occasionally give you a 2 piece kite...

Also if you have a 5th line you need to basically have one bar per kite size, especially if you have lots of different sized kites.

NOT sure if I agree with your last point GALAH - I use the 5th line system and use the same bar and lines for kites sized 10m , 14m and 18m and system works OK for me ( except for the occassional Saturday arvo teabagging sessions at Kurnell when my IRON HEART fails me. )

The fifth line will only tear your kite in half if it bow ties around the kite and this usually happens if the kite falls out of the sky the lines go slack and the kite rolls over a few times , this will result in a bow tie.If you pull on the fifth line and a wave hits you, you will have 2 kites for the price of one a tear straight down the middle.

Or if your in the surf and you are attempting to relaunch the kite via the fifth line and a wave sneaks up and hits the kite, your kite will tear at the leading edge all the way up the center as all the load is where the fifth line is attached.if your in the surf and you drop your kite let it go and swim in if you cant relaunch it fast enough.Personally I love the fifth line and would never go back to four lines.

well yes and no - if you use a stoppered system (more advanced) then you need to adjust it per kite size, but if it is your last resort without a stopper then it is definately one size fits all...

Dustin,

By now there will be some well priced 5th line SS's on the S/H market.

The time and effort in adding a strong enough 5th line attachment.
Or the best option ADD 2. maybe more time consuming and costly than
upgrading.

Explore your Options.

i used one m80 bar on 5, 7, 9, 12, 16m M80's and now 12 nemesis and 20m spectrum 2 without changing a thing and i bail to 5th all the time... smaller kites just hover a bit higher... 16 sits on the water, 20m is a little powered on the water and looks funny, big whoop...
if youve only got a 9 you dont need to worry, just if the kite drops hit both releases and swim in and grab ur kite...
ive seen a kite bowtie and tear in half in dead flat water so its not that much more risky...

i say DO IT
