I believe you all know how i feel about the Naish Octopus system, but this post is just to get some help on how to fix a problem.

I just had to repair my LE bladder after the LE was torn when my kite leash broke. It was on my 9m Shockwave and the guys at Hold the Lines did an amazing job. Anyway, i put the LE bladder back in myself to save some $$$ but i have been having a hell of a time getting all the Octopus values to connect properly. I thought i had it once, but after 30 minutes, my kite was very soft.

Now, here is my problem. I know the LE bladder is fine and all my strut bladders are fine. When i pump up my kite, the LE deflates and the struts. This tells me Octopus valves are leaking, but i know from pass experiences that once the LE deflates, some of the pressure in the struts can leak back through the one way value into the LE. So basically, i don't know which of my 7 struts is leaking....maybe on of them, maybe all of them.

Now my question, can somebody please tell me a method to determine which Octopus valves are leaking and how to fix them. I am getting close to the end of the line and if i can't get it fixed fast i am going to buy a whole new set of standard bladders and be rid of this stupid system forever.

Personally I hate interconnected bladders, mainly for the reason described. You could try inflating th kite and immersing each connection in water individually whilst looking for escaping air bubbles just like you would for a bicycle tyre. Thus should help you locate the ofending hole.
Good luck

Hi Sanamarco,

I'm not a fan at all of "one pump systems". I'd ditch it if it weren't for the cost of a new set of bladders.

One pump systems add weight making the kite less responsive than they could otherwise be, and add that weight at the front of the kite making the kite more susceptible to luffing.

One pump systems also are more prone to leaks around the connection points which just plain sux

One pump systems fail badly in self rescue situations where you have to deflate your leading edge or if you blow a leading edge. Slingy crimp thingies are prone to "unclip" on impact and leave you with only one or two struts inflated for a long swim home if you blow a leading edge or have to deflate it for a rescue.

Besides pumping individual struts extends your cardio warm up by a couple of minutes which is good for your heart and will lead to increased quality and duration of life

K.I.S.S. is where it's at

Good winds and sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Hi Sanamarco,

Soryy to hear you having a little trouble with your Octapus system. It is important to make sure you get the struts all the way onto the L/E connection point, and make sure the internal clip is in place. If you were suspect of one of your connection points being faulty, the water test as mentioned would probably be your best method to single it out. I would suggest, checking every connection while your doing them. If you are still having troubles please give me a call at Windgenuity (02) 9982 6444. I will help talk you through it! Alternatively, take your kite to the dealer where you purchased it, they should be happy to give you a hand F.O.C. (normally).

Regards,

JB

Put some dishwashing detergent and water in a spray bottle, spray everything that you think might be leaking.

If you see bubbles, you've found the problem.

Easier than trying to submerge an inflated kite

If all are deflating then it sounds like none of them are connected properly. Have you tried downloading the video from naish to make sure you are doing it correctly?

Alternatively, When you connect them, if you want to make sure the valve is sealed properly, inflate the strut individually just after you connect it and leave it for a while. this should tell you whether it has been connected.
