G'day all,

I landed myself a 2nd hand Aero2 16m a couple of months back and am still trying to fine tune it. Would appreciate some feedback from any other punters out there that have one?

I have an Aero2 12m which flys great, so I know how to rig it & the options I have, but the 16 flys very differently. In light wind - kinda the whole idea of getting the 16 really, it flys like a dog - needs at least 11-12 knots to get up and going properly - then it flys just fine. When I say like a dog, the symptoms are that with shorter front lines it flies better i.e. pull in the dpower strap an inch.

Is this just 'cos its a medium aspect kite and its a simple weight of kite to lift ratio? I have a suspicion that it is, as I dropped it in the water in a lull the other day and couldnt relaunch. Even after I bought it into the beach and tried a self-launch it wouldnt - most likely just from the few xtra grams of sand and water weight.

Looks like if I want to go lighter - I'll be looking for a foil? What about flying it on a pulley bar?

Chuz

G'day,

A 16 on a pulley bar, that's asking for troubles...but realistically, below 12 knots nothing is gonna work anyway. My 15.5m airush lift is happy in 15 to 20 knots for instance, but that's higher aspect.

That probably doesn't help help you a lot, but kitesurfing in lighter is still a dream i'm afraid.

Hey Mr Plow,

If the kite flys better with shorter front lines then set it up like this from the word go. I still fly a 2002 Airush Lift which really likes to fly on the front lines so I set these 2 knots higher than the back ones. Also I've found in ligther conditions relaunch is way easier after fully depowering before even attempting.

I also have an RRD 16 which is absolutely cranking in 10-12 knots although relaunching in these conditions can be very difficult given the kites size but again depowering a little first always seems to help.

Thanks for the info guys - made me feel a bit less depressed about my lack of wind range

I'll try the front line trick next time I'm out.

FWIW - I thought the 16 was a massive kite when I got it as it dwarfed my 12..I felt very inadequate on the weekend when a guy dumped his 20m X3 next to mine...it was at least twice as big as the 16 to look at - he reckons anything over 15 knots and it turns green and grows horns - you gotta get off it quick when the wind blows unless you like being teabagged against your will.
