I can help you with the deck grip, I have the Naish kite surf board deck grip kits for $80 they are great grips. full deck tail, centre and front foot. I'll post a pic in the morning when I'm back at the shop.

I also have 5 8" board bags if that helps.

Jess a 5'8" board bag is probably ok by the time you add fins etc. Especially if u ever have straps on your board. I use a 6' bag for my 5'10". Bigger is better!

Hey ms jessie
How a bout a gear review on 'the DUKE'. Weve got one here on the wall and it looks the goods in every curve, bend and hollow.
Love to hear what an independent expert has to say about them.

Additional Foot pad: Yep terminal, it did come with a third pad, but its a small pad as your photo shows and doesn't cover the mid section (foot half on and foot half off!). I want the complete back end padded. Besides Ive cut a circle out of it now for the front of the board for when I grab the board. (I ride strapless no leash so grabbing the nose is a must when walking out into the water!) Try this out guys!!

Gear Review. Well I've been on a surfboard all of ~5 hours tops to date (I do live in Canberra atm...2.2hrs to the water)!!! 3hrs of the 5 have been on the Shinn. Yep the board should be too small for me (60kgs 170cm), but I've jumped on strapless and could hold ground straight away. Was changing feet in the corners on the 6' Duke straight away so descided to go smaller for fun... Just getting it now on the smaller board. Why did I buy the Duke. Well Mark Shinn made my twin tip wmn php (and i'm in love with that board... minus the foot straps) and I just got on the Duke and went. The WA seller Allan Ogrady also answered all my annoying questions.... even after the sale. (the board really should have come with an instruction manual on how to put the fins in!! engineers really need at least a diagram to install!!!) I probably ow him a beer!!

Board Bag. I'd want it for travel, so shouldn't I get the exact size to protect it best as the fins would be removed??

Thanks guys for the feedback

You really don't need grip over the back half of the board, 99% of the time the front and back pads are where your feet will be and full deck grip will just add weight.

I just use a bit of hard wax between the the two pads and it lasts for ages because your feet are hardly ever there even when switching feet.

As far as board bags go a little bit bigger is often good when you travel, no doubt you will usually be taking a towel, rashy, wetty etc which are handy to wrap around the nose and tail for a bit of extra protection.

Hi Jesse

I am Glad you are happy with the DUKE 5'6, I think that is a perfect size for you

As mentioned at Kitestock, THE TOYBOY has arrived in OZ...... You need to try it.

If you like the one you are on now...........

When are you back in Perth?

IMO..... as tightlines said use wax instead of more deck grip.

as for a board bag ....always buy a few sizes bigger and wrap a towel around the tail and nose of your boards when travelling. Particularly pin, swallow and cresent tails

Nothing worse than arriving in surf heaven frothing to get into the surf only to unpack your board and discover that there is a ding in the tail or nose and you cant use it until repaired ( or filled with wax )

Most airlines are reasonably careful with boards etc..... but places like Indo and even fiji the handlers can be less than gentle....... I have watched my board bags through the cyclone fence being unloaded in Padang ( sumatra ) by being thrown from the hold onto the tarmac at least a 2-3 metre drop with my mates board bags closely following behind. In fact they found it most amusing that mine hit the tarmac and theirs landed on mine. .....Luckily I had all my clothes and towels etc.. wrapped around my boards and the only damage was the the bag itself.

Yep when travelling you want to get as much padding around your board/s as you can, stand an watch the guys at the airport unpacking you boards and you will shudder. I remember standing on the tarmac in the maldives watching one guy up in the hold litterally pickup a board and throw it out of the hole, every second or third board went direct to the ground and most of them were damaged.

Fortunately I packed two boards in oversized double bag, individually bubble wrapped, no fins, towels, rashie whatever soft I could find around nose/ tail etc as described above and got away without a mark everyone else on the boat used up my repair kit within about an hour

Go bigger you won't regret it.

Hey thanks everyone for the feedback.

I cut upwind with my back foot in the spot where I want to put padding thus my foot is off the back pad. Helps cutting up wind (Thanks Ben Wilson, great hint). Does anyone have a link to where I can buy/see the naish deck grip? I can't seem to find it.

Allan, Perth for 2 days last days in April and a week in May. But this may change.
