Hey Uber,

There are several schools in Sydney; Long Reef Sailboards and Surf, Kitepower at Dolls Point, Botany Bay Kiteboarding, and also Balmoral Boards on the North Side.

There are also probably a few private guys running around so ask the local kiters who they reckon is best. I've heard good and bad about all of themn so pick the one that is closest to home or best repoir with the locals.

Best of luck

Hi Uber

I did a few lessons in Sydney before finding out about a guy on the central coast, he takes you out on a boat, providing you with a real safe envirnment to get used to the power of the kite (no beach gowers, other kites, walk of shame[}:)] etc). He is excellent.

Anyone who is scared of the kite and needs to regain confidence should take a lesson with Mark, I wished I found him sooner, he is super patient and helps you build a solid foundation.

While it is a mission to drive to the entrance, it is worth the trip and candsave you from a potenitial kitemare.

His number is 0412808187

Cheers

Thankyou all for your advice!!

I was just wondering if it is better to buy a trainer kite first? From my understanding you really need to learn how to control the kite so if this is true wouldnt it be better to spend time doing this first then getting some pro training when i get used to the kite?

Or do i just jump in the deep end and go for it?

Hey Uber,
Yeah you can never spend enough time with a trainer (get like a 1.5 - 3.0 meter), i found it was good to go to the beach (to get the best wind) & use it in all different wind strengths. This teaches you both how to keep the kite in the air in lighter winds & also how to ease off the power in really strong winds. Its also good to really crank the kite, do loops etc to see how much power can be generated. Learn the power zones & how far a kite can be flown to the edge of the wind window, how to walk back upwind with it, etc. Try & make the trainer drag you along the sand & make it lift you into the air so you get a feel for jumps. It will help you heaps when you finally get to use a big kite.

Hey there,

The Kitepower Instruction Team is now made up of Rich Stenning, Dave O'Neill, Tim Lewis & our new addition - Ian Rumbell.
All of these guys are very experienced instructors with IKO accreditation, council permits, safety boat and plenty of current model NAISH, NORTH & BEST equipment courtesy of Steve @ Kitepower.

Our lessons are tailored to suit your level of experience and normally run for 2 hours, 7 days a week...

Give us a call and we will make it easy for you.

Cheers

Hey Uber, give all the schools a call that Kitehard suggested, you'll get an idea of what's on offer for lessons and can make a decision that way.

Any kiteflying is good experience, I'd only flown a 1.5m two line foil for fun before I started which did help. If you have the $$$ to spare then buy a trainer...they're always fun!

Peer recommendation a lot more useful than any certificates.

I agree on the trainer kite issue. Probably one in 5 students I teach would have been better off spending thier money on a trainer kite instead of me spending the majority of the lesson teaching them to fly a kite because they have zero kite experience.

So a trainer kite is the go!!! Next Question is what is the best brand? If that really matters? I had seen a "best" trainer snap a line in the wind one day when I was spectating so im not to keen on that one. Is the slingshot any good? I understand it comes with a DVD on how to use it. Although when I have ask the shops they dont supply it with the DVD so I dont know if it matters. Remembering im a total newbie I may need that as a guide. Thanks again for all comments it really helps, please keep the advice coming!

Hi Uber,

The Best Trainer kite is a superb kite, it has a large wind range - that may have been tested by the person who was flying the one that you saw... All kite lines will break in strong enough winds.

There must be a balance between line strength and wind range to ensure the lines do not cause too much drag on the kite and diminish it's perfomrance capabilities.

The lines may have previously struck something or have had a knot in them which would have reduced their strength also....

The Best trainer can also be used in strong winds as a traction kite for the snow!

We have a large range of trainer kites here, the Best Trainer is by far the most popular... Excellent kites from Ozone including the IMP and Little Devil are great to learn with aswell.

We have a NORTH, NAISH & Slingshot trainer here too, including a DVD... also a range of second hand trainers.

Hopefully you will drop by to check them out.
