When they forecast 'coastal seabreezes' they often mean it in the literal sense.
When it gets steadily hotter over a few days and the strong(er) easterlies kick in, it seems to make it harder and harder for the seabreeze to penetrate inland. We live 2km inland from Scarborough
at the top of the Doubleview hill and despite the light SW there this avo, we still had a light SE at home.
You'll generally find the farther West the location the earlier and stronger the breeze; hence Rotto usually kicks in the earliest, Ocean Reef and Woodies are often stronger and earlier than spots like Scarbs and Cott, and places like Lano and Gero that are steadily further West and North (look at a google earth map and you'll realise our coastline heads out West at a misleadingly quick rate) get steadily stronger breezes.
Also stand at Freo on a day with good visibility and look up toward Hillarys, you'll see it sticks out quite a way. Our coastline does not run due North/South like Perthites can sometimes be lulled into thinking.
Just my observations from years of ridiculously fanatical wind-watching...

You da man Jess, except not

So with a whole heap of the smarts thanks to people sharing infos like this, GreenPat and The Landlord went to Pinaroo today and had a marvelous session, one that may not have been had as well further South/East.

So Santa, bugger these troughs off and how about some solid wind for the Christmas New Years week?! Fair 'nuff we might get the big kites out on Monday/Tuesday, but show me a good seven days of lots of green arrows and a couple of yellow for good measure please.

Jess, thank you for sharing your experience .

I queried this topic because I went to the beach today to make sure that the Seabreeze graphs, that indicated no wind, were not wrong: of course they were right and there was no wind at the beach. On my way back home (approx 1km inland), studying the hundreds of wind indicators on the way, I noticed significant wind... So I thought: " Cool! The wind has just started!" ... and went back to the beach... where there was still no wind!?

Just to make sure, I waited half an hour and noticed an increasing wind, but offshore!!! . Then i accepted the hard reality: Seabreeze was right (again!).

During this half hour, I wondered where these two air masses (SSW wind against ESE wind) were going? Upwards? Nowhere, just filling a 'gap' in the air mass? Or is it the same wind that rotate (IMO less plausible).

I leave this response to our Seabreeze's meteorologists!!!

Cheers,

Fred

We've got a "ridge" over Perth, which is from the top of a highcell centred below Albany - it's causing a strong easterly airstream, which, as Jess said, pushes the seabreeze out. (A well positioned high cell does the opposite and reinforces a seabreeze)

Did you notice on Thursday the seabreeze (here in WA) managed to make it only 2-3km from the coast? Amazing - if you weren't actually at the beach, it would have been hard to believe it was 20 knots at the beach.

It was days like this that started seabreeze.com.au! Drove to the beach and back and was amazed at how the seabreeze was at the beach, but not my house! What the?! Horrified at the thought of missing out on wind, I published some graphs on the internet and ...
