Hey,

I just moved up to Darwin and have been looking around Casuarina and Lee point for any kiters. I don't really know the area and aren't to keen to jump straight into the water.

Anyone kiting up here at the moment that could help me out.

I am not sure if Darwin is the spot for kitesurfing!
Not, with the salt water croc's!!
I may be wrong, however, i've been in Darwin last month, and I did not see anyone in the water (not swiming, not surfing and not kiting either). And the wind was absolutelly fantastic: 20 - 30 Knots, cross shore, very inviting. I asked some locals, and they started to laugh: croc's mate croc's!!!

i used to live there ...if i recall the wind only blows in the right direction in a clyclone..and windsurfers are the only idiots to go out!! all the really good spots are full of crocs..
sorry dude, but Darwin is not the beast place to kite ..maybe get a bugy or ATB plenty of sand to play on!! i will call a cople of mates up there to see if any one is flying off the islands.

...don't hold your breath ..

i'm`a`townsville rider and i was up there for a month in june. took my kite gear. i found a`crew riding at buffalo creek off lee point the first car park along. there were about 8 people or so out. was a little gusty but not bad riding.. don't worry about crocs, can't stand people that carry on about sharks and croc's and stingers.. we do live in aus.. but if u get the right wind hit it.. maybe up there next year and i'll be hitting it non stop.. do a search on yellow pages there is someone up there that sells kites and does lessons. i'm sure he'll help u out..

Wow, thats guts guys. That's a real MAN making a stand.
Stompinlife, you are my HERO.

That's remind me the Winfield cigarettes ads: on the top of the ad is the cancer warning: "Medical research has found that smoking is damaging your health" and on the bottom, the well known " Anyhow have a Winfield".

By the way, I have a question: if a croc is taking you whilst kitesurfing, is a kitesurfing related accident, or a croc related accident, or just a stupid incident....?

Enough said!

Yeh, Buffalo Creek in the mid-day times and also the Lifesaving club in the afternoons if the Seabreeze's are happening.

Quite a few regulars here if the wind is on ;)

isn't it funny how we take part in one of the most dangerous sports we strap ourself's to kite to ride are very powerful and uncontrollable force( the wind) yet we cringe at the thought of being stung by a jellyfish.. take a look on how many people have been killed by the local wildlife compared to the big rock on the beach that people get draged into. if we wanted to wrap ourself in bubble wrap try something like competion knitting or something. just charge it. also maybe contact kb mag and find out the number of who does the write up for the northern territory. one good thing about boarders i've found is that were willing to help each other out. a sport thats not spoiled by image yet..

Excuse my ignorance here, having grown up in an environment where crocs are confined to rivers and inland (our inland crocs are as dangerous as your salties) back in SA and not really much of an issue to kiters in the sea, but what is the likelihood of a croc actually taking a kiteboarder?

We kite with sharks all the time, and as far as I know there is only one recorded attack of a shark on a kiter, but sharks tend to hunt when they are hungry. Is it the same with crocs?

Guys kite back in SA in a fresh water lagoon in Lake Sibaya with crocs and hippos, although they tend to stick to the shallower regions where the hippos are not as much of an issue. Hippos are far more dangerous than crocs with more deaths per year than any other animal. There is a link to some of the pictures of the place here:

Stompinlife is on the money. Crocs are like sharks in WA - they're around, but not to the point of having to stop kiting. I've surfed (crap windswell during a cyclone) and windsurfed there (before the conversion) and not one inner city attack. Worth being wary though - there's one guy in the previous threads on Darwin who warns of buffalo creek and I've seen a good sized one there while getting bait.

Enjoy.

as i lived in the topend for 15 years, i can tell you clearly that the crocs in the ocean are only there to move locations or look for food and are very rare. they don't "take" people off boards or boats, they attack under water or where they can lunge at their prey. if a croc is in the ocean ,you can see them floating around or resting on the beach. they are a lazy hunter and prefer to live in inland estuarys where they have plenty of food and protection from croc hunters.
i hadn't heard of kitng when i was there ...an extreme sport up there is getting from one pub to another with less than sufficent beer in the esky!

i agree with rob/menace. there are regular kiters up here. and alot of learners like me too :) We're all friendly so come find us.
P.S. Don't like to think about the crocs when i'm out there, We also have sharks, stingrays and box jellyfish. Just so you can make an informed decision.
