I see one of the cairns shops offers reef trips out. Has anyone tried them? Are they worth while and does anyone know what the costs are like (for the boat, not the helicopter).

The take you out on a boat to a small island on the reef where you can kite from. Pictures look spectacular.

I was there recently and was hoping for a trip to green island where there are always winds...or so it seems.

I discovered that you need to time high tides with the trip as if you get this wrong there is no water....or at least that is what i was told.
As for anything else well i ended up not going as the tides were all crap during my stay.

Some of the local spots like Yorkeys or Port Douglas whilst not spectacular are indeed fun and a nice way to spend an afternoon....if its windy....or head up the coast to cooktown...which rocks.

Give Bruce or Roy a call at It's Extreme and they can help you out. I went out on Sunday with the Extreme crew to Vlassof Cay (not far from Green Island). Had a great day exept the wind was only around 15 knots, but absolutely sensational spot to ride tucked in behind the cay, clear flat water. You can ride the cays (Upolo and Vlassof) in just about any tide unlike Green Island which needs a highish tide. I will try to put some photo's in the gallery (yet to try) of thetrip to Vlassof.

Cheers

Hey Saffer, it be worth a call/visit to Kite Rite (one of the local kite shops). I was there some time ago and they had info on one of the high speed boats that was taking small groups of kiters out to some of the offshore sand cays just to go kiting. I did not get a chance to go out, but I did see a video and it looked pretty damn good.
This was over a year ago so I am not sure if the trips are still being run.

The problem this weekend is it looks like the wind will be too strong.

Hey Saffer

Are you in Cairns at the moment? If so come and say Hi when at Yorkies.

Green Island looks good for the weekend, good tides and 20 to 25 knots. It will cost you around $60 for a ticket but you will be on the Island by about 9:30 am and leave at 4:30pm so it's a full day.

Cheers

I fly into Cairns friday night and there until monday evening.

Definitely keen. Got a 12m Bow so 20-25 should be maintainable. Quite happy to spend a full day on the water and the $60 price tag is reasonable.

Who can I book with? I've sent you a PM.

Ahoy Cap'n,

$60 sounds reasonable. I am heading up to Port Douglas in a couple of weeks. Who was your trip through?

Thanks

Trip is with Great Adventures to Green Island. Just need to be aware of the tides but is great to kite when conditions permit.
Green currently has 30 knots gusting to 35 at the moment.

$60 is what they charge the tourists, locals get it cheaper.

Call Bruce or Roy at It's Extreme and they can help you out as well.
