OK it looks like the " Winter of NO Wind " we've come through has created BIG expectations for Thursday's hoped for Nor'easter so its probably a good time to remind ourselves of the rules related to kiting at the pool at Brighton..

ALL will be pleasantly surprised with the results of the construction but sadly it is going to bring many more punters to the spot so that means more people to get pissed off if kiters do the wrong thing.

SO lets remind ourselves that rigging up ,launching and landing of kites anywhere North of the southern side of the pool is OUT OF BOUNDS. When on the water riding anywhere NORTH of the Novotel is OUT OF BOUNDS and definitely venturing near the AIRPORT is OUT OF BOUNDS. Anyone NOT adhering to these requirements will put kiting at risk on Botany Bay. AND let me say as one of the very regular users of the BAY .... I would be very peeved if that happened.

In addition to the above the usual commonsense stuff like no jumping on the beach, no stupid downwind hot launching of Bow kites, always applying courteous give way behaviour towards outgoing kiters , not jumping upwind of kiters etc etc. are automatic expectations of us all.

I'm anticipating more than the usual number of kiters frequenting the spot due to the improvements of additional large stretches of sand etc. so please anyone who hasn't kited there before ... ask a regular for advice... You will know who they are because they will be the one's doing the right thing... I will be just about living at the place ..as per usual ...( apart from last season when we lost it to construction.) I will be happy to help with info ... I'll be easy to locate ... first there .. last to leave and with a huge grin on my face .. yee haa

ADVICE for BEGINNERS .... we all learnt at some time. There are three or four very unused GOOD beach spots between the pool and Dolls Point.... great spots to practice bodydragging, getting up on the board etc. Please utilize these spots for learning then once you can do the back to the same spot stuff on your board try out the pool area... its great ..but not for learners... we see too many inexperienced kiters getting into trouble by riding in the middle of the experienced bunch...sorry to make it sound tough but its for everyone's safety.

Anyway lets hope for good winds , bright sun and lots of big boosting for Thursday.

see you on the water and safe riding

Col,

Before construction started, in a NE I'd often ride upwind of the south side of the pool, but not north of it. ie Behind the pool.

Is that a no no?

You're bigger than me and I don't want to get hurt.

Until I read Novotel I was thinking you meant Brighton Beach in Brisbane. By coincidence we've just had construction work at the pool there too, about to be reopened this week.

There was 'community consultation' for that project and a group of regular/local kiters met to put forward our requests - official sanctioning of the 2 kite areas approx 100m wide at either end of a 5km beachfront. From first looks it seems like we've been shafted, as the small grassy area that we used for rigging just south of the pool has been ripped up and replaced by planted garden beds. Thanks fer nothing Brisbane City Council.

Mate, its fine to ride in the area you describe .... the main issue is NOT to rig, launch or land kites on the sand North of the Southern side of the pool as the punters are very prolific in that area. The Novotel is basically the northern most point for riding. I often launch my kite in the allowable area then walk up a little past the Northern pool fence so I can get a run at a good patch of wind or if I'm doing the 9km run across to Kurnell as I did today. The wind basically didn't happen at Brighton but KKK was kicking ass from about midday. Couldn't believe it when I got there ... about 20 kiters riding in 20/25 kns . Steve and I enjoyed some nice boosting wind for an hour or so then came back only to find the wind was still only 15kns or so at Brighton. Typical start to the NE season... should have learned from last year.
Cheers mate.. see you on the water

col....

Touch wood we are doing OK with the Council. Forming the Southern Sydney Kiteboarding Club has assisted our public image and provided authorities with the confidence that kiting is being well managed on the Bay.Self regulating as we do gives us a bit more flexibility so thats why its good to remind ourselves regularly of the local rules.

cheers mate ... hope you blokes have a great season up there ...[:

By the way User, did you notice, my enthousiasm paid off...
I know this subject has already emerged on few occasions, but has anyone ever come up with a rational explanation for what the wind's doing in the bay?
It's true it was much windier towards Kurnell today, (as usual), whereas Brighton's shore was barely on...
To add to the bizarre general wind distribution, there's also that "wind ghost" that appears in the middle of the bay during summer time...
Botany Bay has those weird wind patterns... I'd be curious to know what people who've kited there for longer than me have observed, and more importantly... somehow get it!
Is there some sort of scientifical explanation?
It would relieve me in a way... It seems so unfair: why does Kurnell have to be the windiest place in Sydney???

I think it's got more to do with Caltex spuing toxic gases into the atmosphere. The topography and the mangroves behind.

CJP there will be a new player at the beach this summer. Watch out tough guy. You think you jump big!!! Wait till you see the underside of a BZ body board as Bazza goes sailing over you on your Botany Bay. By the way where is the best place to park to be in the cool pool crew? Bring on the summer.

Barry you obviously were not at KKK Thursday and Friday when the big fella (CJP)was getting nose bleads from the height of the jumps he was pulling off . He was sending that Flexifoil Ion 2 into orbit.
One local was heard to say he was jumping double telegraph pole height.I am afraid you will have to come out of the closet and reveal you self if you think you can out jump the Big Fella. Even the great Moritz couldn't do that.

Slitepower eh? :-)
Well the number one reason why Col is jumping so big is the fact that he is flying a Flexifoil Ion2, they are a boosting machine, and so is Col so combine the two and you just stand there and go "wow".
For consistently big landed jumps, Col is the king of the bay for now!

No worries Danza, I can hear this buzzing noise and the smell of burning rubber, I think its coming from the walls???

If you take the piss out of Kitepower, using slitepower, then we will all suffer a huge loss of power, careful with what you think about, it has a tendency to come about!

I reckon there is one guy with at least 30 names in Sydney, don't you agree Dan? No I'm not talking about you either.

Steve

I reckon we will get a NE this arvo, and the tides right for a bit of a push too.
