Going to Bali in July/August.

I only have a 12m kite.

Does anyone who has been to Bali around that time want to confirm my research that it will be a waste of time to take it as I will need a bigger kite?

Also, anyone know whether you can hire gear over there such as a 16m kite(eg, at Blue whateveritiscalled at Sanur) and if so, how much?

Cheers
Keith

I was there last year Kieth.. Every one is pretty much on large kites unless they are light wieghts.. By large I mean 15-20m kites..Try gettin hold of Mario at the Blue Oasis beach club about hire gear (http://www.geocities.com/blueoasisbc/home.htm)But you may find it cheaper to to buy stuff here before you go.. big kites tend to be real cheap and barely used around here..

Ok here is some advice you can use...Believe it or not a larger board will leverage the hell out of your kite. I had a great trip with a 12 3 years ago because i was using it with a 6'4 directional - upwind in 10 knots !Small jumps and cruising in beautiful water over reef after a morning of barrell riding on the surfboard makes for a pretty special trip.

There are some incredible deals on new / near new larger kites and you can pick up a new or barely used directional for next to nothing these days ! A wide style twin tip (41cm plus in width with an efficient rockerline) will also do the trick.

Try using your surfboard - if you surf - cos these are amazing in light wind. Make sure you have a surfboard with you cos bali has some of the most magical waves to be found on this planet. The trades dont fire there until early june - october. U can get 20 knot days but mostly u will be riding 10 - 15 knots.

Really do your homework on kite efficiency as some larger wings slide upwind beautifully while others , in larger sizes , will just tug you down wind in any size over 14 m - there really is that much difference between designs ! Good luck and have a great trip.

pain don't hurt !

The surfboard tip is perfect. Last Sunday in Perth was terrible, maybe 10 knots, and I tried riding a 6'6" surfboard under a 14m kite. It was incredible fun. So if you go with a surfboard and a kiteboard you probably can't go wrong and can still keep the luggage light. And when you go please say hello to Uluwatu for me. I do love her so...

... that's why I was very polite in thanking those that helped.

I am sure Finn can cope - ie. if he is going to give it out, I am sure he can take it. Besides, I don't think Finn is a real person.

Yeah, probably a bit harsh on LouD, but there is a separate For Sale forum. LouD, accept my apologies, you can p1ss on my post any time you like!!!

G'day Keith,
i was up there last year for 5 weeks and had a go on a mates x2 anda 1600mm board and had a ball an changgu nusa dua and if you can get to sumbawa it's well worth the effort.

I weigh 90kgs so i hope that is something to go by.
Just remember to check the tides before you get on your bike to go for a kite as half the paces ya kite up there are in shallow water and are very tide resticted but when it's good it's well worth it.

well i'm heading up there in 3 hrs so have a ripper time mate and all the best.
