West coast of top end of NT, King Sound. Goes off....(If you don't get eaten/swept out to sea)
Failing that....nah, can't think of anywhere else actually. Anywhere in Australia is much the same.

Well if it is an all out contest for absolutely best spot, ease of access not an issue, I'd put in my vote for assorted islands and sand cays on the great barrier reef between Cooktown and the Torres strait. When "The Search" boats, kite teams and film crews finally blow it open, it will have people gasping that such a place is actually in our backyard. Over 600km of South pacific style reef breaks at the perfect angle to the near gale force SE trade wind that blows virtually all year, plus hundreds of islands, lagoons and cays that offer something for the flat water crew as well.

If you want a smile, have a look at the BOM wind rose for Cooktown, Northern Dry Season (and it hardly changes if you sum annually).

It only gets windier and cleaner as you go North.

Lake Eyre.
Massive lake. Wide open spaces. Give it a try!

My pick would be lancelin 1hr north of perth
if you like 30 degrees, low humidity, cristal clear water, and 20-25 kt seabreezes with an ultra flat bay AND descent wave break on the skirt of the reef, not to mention the fishing and crayfish crawling all over the place there!

walk out onto the surf beach, set up and down the line wave ride the 4 or so K's till you see the kites.
walk across the sand dunes still flying your kite and join in the flat (and I mean Flat) water fun.

if the wind is more Sthly then do the extra k's on the waves to the opening and kite back to the main area. That's if you can get past the 2 other flat water paradises on your way.

That's what I'll be doing this christmas/new year with some clients.

best winds

Bowski,

I don’t see a problem with a Search boat going up there. It is visited by dive boats, cruise ships, and plenty of fishermen already. As long as they obey the relevant marine park rules they will be fine.

I’d be happy for it to get some more exposure. Some of the other marine biologists I work with up here are wind-wave junkies too, and we have seen and surfed / wavesailed / kited some awesome spots on the GBR. The talk is always about how to get out there more often. I have a roving operator commercial permit for the whole GBR that covers my ecotourism operations, and it happens to have permission for non-motorised water craft built in to it. Surfing and kiting expeditions on the GBR is something I have had on my mind for quite a while....just haven’t got around to organising it yet. Exposure from The Search could be the ticket.

Send me an email to [email protected] and I’ll give you some more info, plus pics and maps etc.

Andy
