This is not a Best pimp.

I am sick of flying a large kite on light wind days and want to get a TTboard designed specifically for light wind. I don't want a huge chunky beginners board. I'm after a board that will do the same job as a smaller TT but in light winds. I weigh 85kg and I'm not a beginner.

I've heard the Slingshot Glide and the Nobile XTR are worth looking at. If you have used these boards or another board that you rate please respond.

Hey Bagger,
I've tried most light wind boards TT and Surf boards and settled on the SS Glide. Also 85 kg and with a 14 T3 I'm up and going nicely in 10 knots.

Oh by the way, I'm not a Slingshot Pimp. I actually fly and ride Airush most of the time.
After a lot of $$$ spent, I found the slingshot combo the best light wind option for me.

I hear OZone are bringing out a Light wind kite in 2010.

Try as many as you can first.

I've tried a lot of light wind boards, and although the Glide has good bottom end its very stiff and in anything over 12/13 knots worth of chop its a real pain to ride.
It feels very big too soon.

My pic of the current crop of light wind boards is the Underground Zephyr 1.44x46 it rides well in chop up to 18-20 knots, and gives me a bottom end to about 10 knots with a 14M kite (my biggest).
I weigh 74kg dry.

I've also tried the Cab Plasma, Airush Switch 1.44x43, 2008 Underground 1.46x46, Cab Prodigys, Nobiles, and the Underground is a standout. The new pads and straps complete the package.

Ive got a 06 slingshot glide and love it for those light wind days. Like Steve says it gets a bit slappy in chop but for ultimate low end its great. Its big but will get you out when nothing else will.

Go the Nobile XTR. I have had one for 3 years and it is the most used piece of kit I have.
Mostly by everybody else at the beach

Thanks fellas for your replies. The ss glide does sound good. Some of you have raised my concern about how a light wind board will behave once the wind increases to 12-13 knots and the water becomes a bit choppy.

I'll definitely check out the Underground boards. The XTR looks just like the 666 but bigger and I've tried the 666 and loved it. Anyone tried both? Do they feel similar?

Nobody has mentioned the Liquid Force WLF or WLF Ltd. Is this a dud? It looks good, unfortunatley I've never seen one in the flesh.

Dont believe everything you read here. Most are pimps, sponsored riders, working in shops or shop owners. They all just want to tell you their boards are best because they have to or want to sell you their brands. Just try as many different types as you can, ask local kiters if you can have a go at theirs. Nearly all reputable brands have light wind boards. Just a matter of trying and finding the best deal!

Disclosure: I am not a shop owner, not a sponsored rider, not affiliated with any brand in anyway...

I have been on the quest for light wind riding for a quite a while.
My stats
97Kg Dry

I think personal preference is VERY important... you need to try them out... you might find that some boards feel better than others.

I tried the following boards:
Underground FLX 146 x 46
Slingshot Glide 149

They are both VERY GOOD boards, and you can't go wrong with either.

I decided to buy the Slingshot Glide for light winds.

What I do, is bring 2 boards down to the beach, and as soon as it picks up too much for the Slingshot Glide, I swap to my Nobile 555 134
This is a great combo for me....

Hope this helps!
Enjoy!

G'Day TBagger,

Im 80kg and ride 10/12m Dos's

I have not ridden the Slingy but the XTR is a weapon in the light stuff for me anyway.
Don't take our word for it just ride as many as you can, If you like the 666 you will like the XTR.
I normally ride a 2009 134 T5

Have fun, Chris.

Depends what you want to do, but I highly rate skimboards.

Crazy low-end cruising/tricks/pumping onto waves etc. heaps of fun, and if the board is a decent normal skimboard shape(pintail) they are also heaps of fun when it picks up and easy to handle,

If you have the chance, try the Spleene Door 164, it is designed especialy for light wind and works very well (plans exeptionaly early, goes upwind extremly well, and can be used comfortably when the wind picks up). I do not own one but have tried it several times (I think it was a 2007 or 2008 model). I do not know how it does compared to other big TT.

I owned a 2007 model, it was ok, not in the same boat as that years Underground FLX or the SS Glide though. It was heavy and the deep single concave took something away from its bottom end IMO and the tips were a bit narrow for a good light wind board. I also found it too stiff and slappy once there was any chop above 12/13 knots of wind, good pads not so good straps.

The WLF is the light wind machine in the LF range. Ultimate model is the WLF Ltd Edition but plenty of guys ride the standard model here - cheaper and stronger. Go and see Jas at West Oz (0411 510 514, or 08-9529 1324) and demo one. I will be surprised if anyone else of similar ability & size can get going on another board when you cant on the WLF.

LOL I'm a PIMP ... just wish I could get paid for sex!!!! ... actually just wish I could get some sex without paying

I teach with Flysurfer FlyDoor L and XL in ridiculously light winds and have no problems getting even my heavyweight students up and planing.

Yep, totally agree here.

I only ride the Glide when I cant stay upwind on the Lunacy.

Sure steve is right that it aint the best board in the chop, but it has the best bottom end than anything I've tried and in solid 13 knts I'm on the Lunacy anyway.

If you cant get going on the glide, give up, go home and crack a beer.

Oh yeh, no one mentioned that it has tiny fins so you can cruise around in a couple of inches of water. This comes in handy when the tide is on the way out.

Mate, check-out the Ocean Rodeo Mako's ... not very popular down-under, but bloody good boards - the 150 x 40 is a good lite wind board (or the 140 if you are a smaller guy) and can be used in waves as well ... also, if you are worried about chop - the Mako's eat chop and go up-wind easily ...

kiteforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2332906&start=150 is an old thread (thye have replaced the old flat pads with much better ones now from Liquid Force i think) - can find more recent threads if you do a search
