Bit light down here (newcastle) but the waves were MASSIVE. Surfest begins tomorrow so although I went out for a very short stint, it was pretty cool to watch the surfers going insane from the beach. I got some good pictures too

where did you go out windangoesoff?

I went to warilla for about 3hrs this afternoon. Was ****ting my boardshorts most of the time. biggest waves id been out in before today was maybe 1.5 foot. Was so scared of dropping my kite and getting caught inside[}:)]

was awesome afternoon though. got a bit of air for the first time too off some waves and landed

hello prepare
you must of been on the green waroo

i would have been out on the yellow best while you were rigging up .. was out for a couple of hours. Dropped my kite where the big ones were breaking for at least 3 min (sh$%ting myself) but just mangaged to get it up just in time. It was great riding some of the huge waves in the middle of the beach (by riding i mean getting in front of the wave and making sure i did not come off)

You had some mighty big balls being a newbie out there. You did great though.

even Dolls Pt had waves today so it must have been pretty big on the surf beaches. Only problem was the wind was a bit light until just before sun down when it kicked up a few knots...

Yep I know when I am beaten. Underpowered in (apparently) 4 meter swell is not my idea of a giggle. But it was fun to watch! Gordo lach and terry were going nuts out there.

Yesterday and the afternoon before were epic at Dolls, head high waves on the bigger sets breaking way out and rideable for ages, best session was last night, kited till dark from about 3.30pm. Wind was a southerly with an opposing tide and a bit stronger than the night before which was ENE, better direction too.
So many things have come together, the beach was just bulldozed so the sand banks were much bigger and further out. Provided we get some wind again it will be on today as well.
I used the new 06 Underground 1.32 and a 16SB, awesome combo, those boards are the best things I have ever ridden, especially in waves and they just eat chop better than the 05 models, incredibly good boards.

Found the 1.28FLX 06 model my son dropped and watched the tide take away at approx 7.00pm. Its amazing how far they and how quickly the current flows, it was approx 750M downstream past the Skiff club.

In the morning I went out the National Park at Kurnell and watched some Maroubra based surfers tow in on massive waves, several close calls and lost boards, wish I had taken the camera to show you all how insane it was.

Those bra boys out there are a bunch of ****wits thinking they own that place. We've been surfing it for years, and the older kurnells guys have been doing it for decades and if we try to go out these days those guys belt the **** outta you for suring there even though we live just down the road. Hope one of em dies out there
Sorry Steve, I just hate it when people say that these guys are "hardcore" and whatever cause the only thing they are doing different is towing into waves that we used to paddle into, though we never used to brag about it and plaster pictures of ourselves in international surf mags.

My pics are only of the surfers, i went home to get my gear and left the camera at home. And I am sure there are many better pics of surfing that day than mine..

The part I really liked was the local news story about the size of the swell, warning people about how dangerous it was and not to go out in it. And then, to back up their point, they interview the local council man about the huge and dangerous surf....and its Gordo, trying to look sensible as he outlines the dangers to the unsuspecting public, safe in the knowledge that he was only just out there riding around in it with a grin so wide I thought the top of his head might fall off. Classic.

No worries Jeff, I didn't say they were hardcore, but I did say insane!
I had just been to the Chiro, and was killing time waiting to get a crown fitted, yesterday was my day of pain off, that why I went out after the dentist and kited for 3 hrs!

I don't think you will have to wait long till someone dies out there.
They are glory seekers for sure, the section they go for is a very short ride, but must look good in mags, each ski had a photographer on it.

From my vantage point it looked like there was a better break further round towards boaty.

Real "hardcore" surfers don't do it for magazine or website shots, they do it because it is a soul cleansing experience thet is deeply personal to each one. When I surfed the guys that had the real cred were often the quietest, they were rarely heard to say, "did you see me, blah, blah, blah", violence was almost unheard of. Things went pear shaped after the introduction of the leash, and mass marketing, its a big business now...................

The waves at Dolls were so much fun, some of the biggest I've seen. Come over next time!

What about the times which require a subsequent "pants cleansing experience"?

Its no longer possible to hide the grey hair, sagging skin, scars, etc, not that I could ever be bothered!!

Its quite true though, you were osctracised a bit if you wore a leash back in those days, it was seen a more pure to not lose the board in the first place, then to have to swim in for it and paddle out again. I started sufing when I was approx 8yo, my brother and I carried my uncles balsa mal to the beach everyday, we rode on our own, together and with the dog, pretty much all day.
My brother and I bought our first board a couple of years later it was an 8'6" poly mal that had "Batman takes LSD" on the bottom, we had no idea what that meant but thought iw was a cool statement to have on the bottom of our board!!

I travelled down to Geroa on 27th and it was epic!! 3 kites out getting loong rides. Sets were probably 8ft and it was glassy on the waves (slightly offshore). bloke on the new looking Vortex managed to tear every panel off his kite when he dropped it in front of a bomb. Sorry Mate, you were ripping too!! Wind was 15knts and steady, perfect for down the line riding. Several pole-surfers rigged up and sat on the beach. Others were stalled in the line-up, but getting rides. Thanks Wati

Hey dogs, what was it breaking like on the south side of the headland (7 mile beach) where that little reef is. I have always wondered if that has a wave?

that wave can be epic, it can take a big swell. They call the left hander right on the point "chips" but the reef 100m off the end of black-head point I don't know what they call it.

Was it breaking dogs?

That point was definately breaking, but its 7km downwind to the beach if you stuff it. Pole surfers can swim upwind 50m! Couldn't have been better than the beach break

Hey Steve, I would've for sure if I could kite but I've stuffed my knee so I'm off the water for a while. It was torture not being able to go out on those 2 days with the NE'er and then the S'erly. I was spewing. Good excuse to get the video out. Kurnell looked fun in the NE'er with little lines coming through down the bay
