We are just finishing the construction of a 10 room resort on Bulabog Beach (sorry about the name but it has no reflection on the beach itself!!) on the island of Boracay in the Philippines.
Reef retreat Resort will open on the 1st November 2007 and we are currently taking bookings for the season so if you fancy a holiday in the tropics, email us on [email protected]. Our website will be up and running soon but in the meantime i can send you photos or details via email.
We have a windy season from November to April, crystal clear waters with average temperature 27 deg and a flat water lagoon protected by a reef or waves outside the reef. Its ideal to learn to windsurf or kitesurf or a great place to just get on the water and board!! Its been the location for the Asian Windsurfing tour for 18 years and kitesurfing for the last 3 years.
For those of you with non boarding partners, only 10mins walk is the famous white sand beach which stretches for 4 km, perfect for scuba diving, sunbathing or watching the sun set with a cocktail or 2!!.
Look forward to meeting you.:

Hi there,
What are the room rates for February, theres a few of us planning to head over there for a couple of weeks. Was there earlier this year and the place goes off, maybe when you explain the place to people you should mention the awsome crazy beach parties that goes till late every night as well as the sick kiteing conditions in crystal clear water, If anyone else is keen on a Feb trip let me know, i also have pics if anyones keen

Fruit fly..."sick kiteing conditions in crystal clear water" ... mate don't get me wrong, I like the place too, true about crystal clear waters, BUT, I am really concerned about the sewerage (treated) outfall pipe that runs right through the middle of kite-beach and stops at the start of the reef ... did you not notice the smell somedays last Feb ?

After quitely talking to some of the local instructors etc... about it ... 'sick' is the word alright ... quite a few admitted to having nagging sore throats for a while... few of us got the runs as well (to be honest, don't know 100% if it was from food or the water itself, but chances are...)

I really think those with vested interests there (Winnie, Nenette, Ocean Republic crew etc...) should get together and lobby the local gov't/Mayor to do something about getting it put further out to sea ... IF it gets worse they are going to have problems tourist-wise, as nobody wants to come to a tropical paradise and kite in stinking sewerage outfall water even it has been treated (the treatment works are just behind Winnies new rooms) ... me and a mate were thinking about buying an apartment, but the 'stink' put us off for now ! With the rapid increase in Hotel/room developement now happening on kite-beach itself, the amount of sewarage pumped-out is only going to increase.

Also, it does tend to get a tad crowded these days - the Russians aren't coming - they are already there (heaps of other euro's as well)! Other than the crowds and stink, it's a great place...

Around the corner islands are very nice although they tell me now the odd
machine gun fire and pirates kidnapping still prevalent. If you go take the caution spitfire it has the fakey bullet hits so they will think theyve done you over already and let you on your way lol.

buzz, it's a case of following your neighbor "mrs.brown" if she complains then i'll follow..sorry to say this is a common and prevalent practice amongst a lot of us filipinos. we'll wait and see what mrs. brown does well..yep every damn year it gets worst(sewage pipe)i even broke a fin on that damn thing. i hope i do have a voice but but am from a different partof the islands if i see my place where i kite or windsurf get a bit dirty i do a little to help clean up even by just burning a few garbage and unwanted debris when am done. i tried planting trees once so there would be shade here in our place, a year later when they were about a 2mtrs. high some dumb nitwit decided it was good for firewood..

Hey buzz thanks for the heads up, kiteing on Bog beach doesnt quite sound so flash. I went in May when the wind is onshore on the opposite side of the island. Hope they sort the poo pipe out caus its an awsome little island. I thought i found heaven where you can party all night and kite all day, is there anywhere on this side of the planet where the kiteing is good and also the nightlife???????? anyone.
Does Reefretreat have any comments on the turd obstacle course in front of his hotel ???

Please don't get me wrong ... I think Boracay is great otherwise ... I brought up the sewerage smell issue mainly to encourage some possible debate in the hope something gets done about it ... White Sand beach (the other side to the kite-beach) gets all the attention from the local authorities - but they have got to start to realise that kite-boarders are a big drawcard now and a great source of revenue for the whole island (and I suppose Phillipines in general) ... the amount of developement happening on kite-beach is increasing all the time and I presume the amounts of outfall will increase and this makes me worried that the smell might get worse unless something is done...

I've been 3 times and it was only the last time (mid-late Feb this year) I noticed it and a few locals also mentioned it ... IF, they hadn't been talking about it, then I probably wouldn't have mentioned anything. But it is a fact - there is a sewerage outfall pipe dumping treated sewerage just out the back ... also I like to add, it might just have been that by the end of peak-season, the amount of outfall had to increase ... it might of been just mis-management by workers and they stuffed up just that time ... it could of been that the wind was more on-shore and this made it worse ... the fact remains, with increasing development and tourist numbers it has to be monitored more closely.

I lived in Coffs Harbour for 13 years and went thru the whole ocean sewerage outfall episode there ... probably the best thing about Aussie is the almost total concern by all in regards pollution and protecting our prestine coastlines and beaches. It's a delight to go to Coffs each year and swim/kite/surf in perfectly crstal clear water (even right at the North wall - near the jetty which is at the end of the restaurant strip and quite a built up area). Asians don't have this same mentallity unfortunately, and need to be educated - I really hope kite-beach on Boracay doesn't get too crowded and polluted, and the local authorities get onto it...

Fruit fly: how was the wind on white sand beach during May ? The forecasts didn't look that hot ... how much do you weigh and what size kites were you flying ?

Hi Buzz and Fruit Fly,
You will be pleased to know that we are doing something about the "treated" waste. Since the season, we have set up a Bulabog Residents association which combined with the Boracay windsports association have paid for a UN representative to come and give a report on the state of the water around our island.
The Pipe you speak of was supposed to go 2 mile out to sea but the government ran out of money at the time of installation so we are discussing with them about the extension to the origional specified distance.
The waste coming out is treated as you said, the UN mans findings showed that the levels were normal and safe levels.
I can assure you that none of us here want to enjoy our favourite sport in polluted seas and as you suggested are trying to get it sorted.
As regards the increase in construction on bulabog (of which i am one of those) this will not affect the output at all because bulabog doesnt have a sewerage system!!! we all have to construct concrete septic tanks for our waste. This is collected when full and taken to the drying plant and reused. The waste that is being discharged is from the WHITE BEACH!!!!!
Hope this clarifies the matter a bit for you and i hope it doesnt stop you from coming and enjoying our wonderful island again
