Does anyone know off the top of their head the prefered magentic wind directions for Brighton in front of the Novotel.

If you listen to the Sydney airport ATIS to check the wind it seems that 040 degress is ideal (noreaster) and everyone comes out to play when it's 040.

But what heading is the Southerly component?

I can see right now that people are out in a 180 degree wind, but it certainly doesnt look ideal.

Because of the curve in the bay I cant think of the ideal southerly wind that would match the Northerly 040.

..If anyone knows.....?

Thanks

dunno off the top of my head, but google earth should be able to solve that one pretty quickly.

The curve of the bay means that even when the wind should be going straight down the bach at brighton it has come over land further upwind and it's a bit nasty. In that event dolls / wanda / sans sushi (very tide depandant) are better options

Well the opposite of a 040NE'ster would be offshore.
Due south 180 is ok and further past 180 and it starts to get gusty and offshore.
Ideal is SE 160-170.
Must be very careful in any S or SE wind a runaway kite can end up over near the airport, make sure you always use a leash, please.
And do not kite in front of the Novotel, you will incure the wrath of the Airport Feds and they can take your gear and shut down the bay.
The accepted and agreed to ages ago most Northerly point you should never kite past is the sea baths southern net opposite the Longreef shop at the southern end of the restaurant building.

And do not go further East out into the bay approx 1.5-2klms in line with the control tower, at that point jibe and head back to shore.

The launch up there is ultra dangerous now, there are fences in front of the dunes, be ready to pull the pin if your launch or landing goes wrong, plus a few metres beyond that is one of the busiest 6 lane roads in Sydney.

Further south is much better now because the beaches have been widened, Dolls is excellent in an opposing tide, as is Wanda (less affected by tide, its open ocean) in any S or SE wind.

Why cant we go any further North in wind with a Northerly Component? The beach further North is so much quiter and wider. Surely with a Northerly type wind, especially a Noreaster, there is no chance of ending up on the runway.

Do you know who made the decision that the Novotel is the mark, and do you know who can be contacted to make a new decision.

This is a waste of good space that could get kiters away from the beachgoers at the main part of Brighton.

And I dont mean all the way North where the windsurfers go. Just further Noth to where we are now so we can get more space.

Hey Monkey,

FAC (Federal Airport Corporation) have an exclusion zone around the airport "perimeter" (the perimeter extends beyond the runway itself) of 4 km. The approach glide paths vector off at 45 degrees from the runway up and away from the runway to allow for side slipping aircraft and aircraft slightly off the glide path. If FAC enforce the exclusion zone, you will lose every inch of the bay as a kiting area, all the way to Dolls Point and including Kurnell.

Getting allowances for a particular wind direction adds grey areas to the equation for the government. If 40 degrees is allowed, then surely 50 and 60 would be OK on your theory too. At what point do you make the cut off, and measured by what instrument at what time. What if the wind shifts with a southerly buster of 35 knots hits and 10 riders are a mile away from the runway with 16m kites? This is why it is a blanket rule, it avoids confusion and covers political arses.

Sailing closer to the runway than Novatel is crazy in a NEaster anyway due to tip vortex from Jumbos turning into mini twisters which turn kites inside out as far away as Kurnell. Ive seen it happen!

Let sleeping dogs lie, we've been down this road many years ago and you have a great agreement .... you can ride in some parts of the bay in any wind you like!
