Stay on the sand and learn to jump there, just my 2c
The replies to this post are conflicting, but my experience is that NE and SE work there, but you cannot kitesurf at the main baeach are too crowded. There are good spots a few klms either side of Byron.
Alex is a helpful and enthusiastic guy for sure, but his advice, if it is till true about learning to jump on the beach sucks, if you want to jump get in the water, its the only place for jumping IMO.
You will notice Alex walks with a limp now, like a lot of other people who have done a lot of beach jumping, or kitesurfing too close to shore in onshore winds.
The beach can be used for buggying and kite landboarding, but not beaches that are crowded with people, which rules out a lot of beach in and near Byron.
Alex tends to kite in crowded places, for reasons I just cannot accept or understand, he sets a very poor example to new kiters and tends to get local kitesurfers and non kiting locals upset, because his actions have put some great spots at risk of being banned.
Respect the rights of other beach users, always kite on land in sensible uncrowded locations, don't jump on land.
