Heading over to Hong Kong next month. Has anyone ever purchased KS gear over there?
If so where from and was it cheaper like everything else is in HK?
Thanks.

Price depends on the brand you want.
Cabrinha for example is not cheaper BUT others are, go to Google Hong Kong to search for kitesurfing.
There are two shops in HK one on the island that doesn't keep much stock. The other is near the airport and stocks only Ocean Rodeo and maybe some other brands.
Hope this helps

Ratlizard,
I was in HK for a week late last year and was thinking about cheaper kite gear also. The only thing I could find (and I admit I didn't look too hard) was a Pryde/Cabrinha factory outlet shop in Kowloon. I checked out the shop but they didn't have much stock and their prices weren't that great. All I ended up buying was a couple of footstraps for a homebuilt board and a t-shirt.
I'm sure if you look harder you'd be able to find a distributor of the other brands and they may do better prices than I could find. There are probably a few smaller shops out there that offer prices better than Australian retail.
Cheers,
Munteruk

When comparing costs don't forget that it is more common now for brands to request that kites are returned to place of purchase for any warranty issues or at very least cover freight and duty if any items are replaced.
If you import a kite yourself under Australian law you are deemed to be the manufacturer, in the case of a product indemnity claim.
That is if a product you import causes injury to another person and it is proven that the bad design or manufacture of the kite is the cause. You can be sued. That is why as an importer we all pay tens of thousands of dollars for insurance. It's an unlikely senario, but the cost of warranties and insurance does add to the price of gear.
Let the buyer beware.

In the past i've bought a number of kites from Hong kong. Luckily i've got a mate who lives there and can deliver them to me when he comes back for a break. The reason i used to get them from honkas was because they used to be at least half the price of the same kite in Perth.
However, with the extra competition in the market now, the price of kites here has come down a couple of hundred but for some reason has gone up in Hong Kong. Also the guy that ran the shop where i used to get them has moved on and they dont keep as much stock any more, making it harder to get what you want.
I've also found that the local shops will normally give a reasonable trade in price if you bought the gear off them. A big positive when you want to upgrade.
Check out a shop called x-games but personally i prefer to buy local now.
