I have posted before about where to go as going to New York with wife next year. (April).

The consensus was "go to Hawaii" but am thinking maybe a bit too full on.

I am therefore thinking about Cabarete. Seems more like a Northern Hemisphere Bali type holiday which is more my scene.

Anyone been there and got any comments please? Any info as to wind, kiting, vibe, cost, getting there, accommodation, non-kiting wife- friendly?, etc, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A good move I would say as the Dominican Republic adjoins the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere (Haiti...been there).

You costs will prob. be 1/5th going to Dom. Rep. and the kiting pleasure almost as good, if not better; I hear that the locals in Hawaii can be grumpy. But sometime in your life Hawaii is a must I believe.

i would definitely do cabarete if i were you. There is always wind, warm water (ride in boardies, no rashy needed), flat or chop within 10 minute walk of each other, waves out the back. Its got everything!

The night life is awesome too. Cheap good food, "Fat Chicken" is a must! You get huge Tuna steaks with salad for under $5 AUS. The pizza place is gd also down the eastern end of town, wood oven pizza's for $3-4 AUS. Bakeries are awesome too!

Geez i miss that place... Even the kiting!

Its only con is that it is gettin more popular and therefore more expensive by the year but still worth goin to. If you are goin with ur wife, you mite wanna do the "all inclusive" deal which gets you airport transfers, food and all the rest. or you can just book into a hotel like Cita Del Sol which is fairly cheap (where Julian Kidd and Daniel Anderson are at the moment)

Not sure about the season in April tho, it wont be as regular a wind as in June/July but i think it still would be good. Have a look on http://www.windsofcabarete.com for info on wind at different times of the year.

Its a bit of a mission just to travel to DR from Aust (30 hrs later and $3500, atleast) but if im ever in the states, i would definitely drop into Cabarete for a few weeks atleast!

If you got any more questions let me know.

Thanks a heap Adam,

figured out the cheapest way to get there is a "Round the World" ticket for $2800. It's going to cost us about that to get to New York anyway. Obviosly this won't include accommodation.

With the "inclusive" deal, are you saying to arrange from Perth or to do it from the States?

As for wind, yeah, don't think April is going to be as good as June-September. The upside however is it has surf there too

Thanks again

(Might have to re-post this when Dan gets back)

why dont you look at unexplored areas. what about the andamans, or lakshadweep.
lakshadweep is a largely unpublicised group of islands off the south west coast of India.
to my mind there has to be surf, there has to be wind.
It is probably a hassle to get to, find accommadation, etc etc etc but once acomplished you would certianly reap the rewards and i imagine it would be mega cheap.
Just a suggestion........

heres some web sites

Hey Poor relative hows Bosnia and Herzegovina for kiting? Sounds very unexplored i can imagine. Yeah, there probs are lot of places with lots of potential that havent been riden. Not sure if those places you said would be too "non-kiting wife friendly" but.

jjd, not sure about where to find out about the inclusive packages, u'll probs hav to hav a search on net or maybe sum travel agents hav some info. I just no that a lot of Americans go to the DR cos its super cheap (for them) to get packages similar to Bali packages that we get in aus.

Dan has cable internet in DR, so im guessing he might reply to this thread b4 he returns maybe.

Cheers

Poor,

the Andamans are low-lying and were pretty much destroyed by the Tsunami so I don't think I will be going there. Not really near New York either but nevermind ...

Adam,

thanks for your constructive comments

I had a great time in Cabarete last year. Met lots of cool kiters. You can fly into Puerto Plata on a round-the-world ticket. There are direct flights from NYC.

Low end accommodation: Ali's Apartments (thatch-roof huts ~$12/night)
High end: beachfront hotels.

Alternatively, cruise some of the classifieds on windsofcabarete.com for some expat-owned condominiums etc -- if you're gonna stay for a few weeks.

I was able to rent a kite from Dare2Fly (on kitebeach) pretty easily. Curiously, I met waaaay more Europeans than N.Americans there.

Other tips-- learn to love the moto concho's (jumping on the back of a moped with your kite gear in hand); the darker-skinned kids who only speak French are the Haitians; although not really legal, most places prefer to be paid in US dollars, so if you wanna buy a kite while there, take USD cash. The local ATMs only dispense local currency. Buy your beer at the roadside stands before wandering into the beachside bars- it's THE thing to do. Be in shape for hours of daily kiting!

Rohjar,

thanks for your reply mate. Just a couple of questions if you don't mind.

How much was it to rent a kite (might be worthwhile to save lugging a kite round)?

Are prices reasonable for kites there (given a few companies test there)?

Thanks again

Kite rental was 30 usd for a half day. Ooh yeah, 2nd hand kites are easy to buy-- from pro's who've just been given their updated quiver for this season, schools gettin' rid of last year's kites etc.
That's why it's good to have USD cash- atm's only dispense pesos, and sellers prefer not-pesos. Credit card facilities are limited to paying for your nice hotel. I don't remember new kites being cheap though.

With your RTW tix, your kiteboard is free, except on USA legs. Bloody 80 buck fee. So a fake golf bag will help.

Quaint random trivia:
Electricity is a hot political issue in DR. Cabarete gets ~22 hrs/day, but the rest of the country gets worse service. The power of Al kiter! You'll also be confronted with one of the few disadvantages of being Aussie--none of us learn Spanish. There's no restrictions on foreign ownership of land.

OK, after doing more research looks like Cabarete may just be crap in April (or at least a bit too much hit and miss).

Have now narrowed it down to:

- Antigua
- Aruba
- Margarita
- Mexico
- Barbados

Anyone been and go any feedback?

Thanks
