JANUARY 22 UPDATE: PERTH WAKE PARK WAS TONIGHT APPROVED BY ROCKINGHAM CITY COUNCIL.

After a decade in the wilderness, the thrills and spills of cable skiing are a step closer to returning to Perth – with a cable ski park recommended for approval on a big, rural block in Rockingham.

City of Rockingham officials have endorsed the planned ski park after receiving 100 submissions supporting the project and 10 against. The 10 objections included concerns about noise, traffic, mosquitos, anti-social behaviour, and effects on the water table and nearby Wellard wetlands.

In October last year, oneperth.com.au revealed that water sport devotees Simon and Ben Hurrey intended to build the so-called Perth Wake Park on a rectangular, 11.69ha plot at the corner of Mundijong Road and St Albans Road in Baldivis not far from Kwinana Freeway

Drove past it last Monday and nothing happening. The site looks too muddy for the machinery and I reckon they've given up for the winter. Looks like the lake is mostly dug out but doubt it will be ready this summer.

Well seeing as though you don't fly a kite whilst riding a cable, I would think that would have to be a pretty obvious assumption for most people to make.

I wont be there. I don't like activities I have pay every time to do it. With kiting, surfing, mountain biking etc, once you have the gear, its all free.

I recently was overseas and went to a wake park over there. I have experience water skiing behind boats and in the cable parks . I started kite boarding a couple of years ago and had read many people saying that it is good to do some wakeboarding to get board skills for kite boarding. I dont really see it. On my recent wake park visit I could only see minimal skill set reference between kiteboarding and wakeboarding. Apart from the boards looking similar I felt wakeboarding was much more like skiing than kiteboarding. Excepting kiteboarders who are into actual wakestyle kiteboarding I couldn't see using a wakepark to gain kiteboarding skills as being really valuable. Kiteboarding board skills are much harder. Thats not to say that I didn't have alot of fun, but for me wakeboarding in wakeparks doesnt offer nearly the buzz or challenge I get from kiteboarding.

Disagree a bit mate, Wakeboarding is way harder than kiting. I started wakeboarding then went to kiting, they are quite different, but tricks wise kiting is alot easier to learn, much more height time to correct. If your not into to tricks/ramps does get a bit dull where ocean kiting is always something exciting. Wakeboarding teaches you edge/pop and builds strength, you dont build anywhere near as much strength kiting.

Well done to the kite park crew, hope it works out for you, i will be down there for sure.

Nice! I must agree I would far rather have a good kite sesh than go to the cable, I was just pointing out it's not that exxy.

p.s.
If you kite every-day all season on mostly the same kite they are pretty worn out by the end of the year and you have to upgrade anyway .

Don't mean to be the harbinger of doom, but they tried that once already.....Perth apathy!

Perhaps it needs to be near a transport node so kids can get there, suspect this was half the reason it didn't go to well last time. (Below the age of 18 can't get there, over the age of 18 more interested in girls, cars and booze)

Actually it was because the owners son passed away, the place reminded them to much of him so they decided to close it down.

Although it may have closed anyway, but you can't be sure of that. One thing I do know however is that riding cable is getting more and more popular now days with the price of fuel increasing (to run a boat) and the addition of kickers and sliders at every cable. I'm sure they will do fine.

From what i can tell on www.facebook.com/PerthWakePark excavation is coming along well despite all the rain.

This is going to be an awesome thing for Perth. Get behind it.

Would it be a good idea to run it at night? Under floodlights would be pretty cool!

that would be sick with lights - would probably make for some quieter sessions

I heard night sessions at cable is the easiest way to injure yourself cos you can't see the water when you come in to land off a kicker.

True. You really should try avoid hitting kickers at night, sliders are fun though!

technically wrong. its easier to injure yourself by wearing a blindfold and riding a Windrush Clubman with the daggerboard down and hitting a slider at the same moment as sneezing (not to be confused with 'steezing').

I'm currently in Singapore for a couple of months. My gear arrived yesterday so I hit the cable for two hours last night. It's a nice setup and good crew. I can't wait for Perth Wake Park!
