Does anybody here wear a camelback while kiting? I got home yesterday and was extremely sick as a result of dehydration and gulping a lot of seawater?

Was thinking of bringing mine along to my next session.

Why not i say. It will even offer a little protection on those back slams.

Ha! I am newbie. I don't get airborne. Not on purpose, anyway.

Seriously going to bring it next time, I feel like I've got the ****ing plague or something.

I have one I wear when looking at a long session when its hot. Sipping regularly makes a HUGE difference even to coming into shore for a drink whenever you get desperate. You can kite way longer with consistent energy and still not go home knackered. Definately a good thing.
Gotta be prepared to wear the kook label though

Kook label? Sounds sensible to me. I don't stay out long, I still have to do the Walk of Shame, but stuff rooting through my bag with one hand while I fly the kite with the other. Or wasting time launching or landing just to get a drink?

they are nice to use on down winders n that.. i personally keep water on the beach in a bottle so i am nicely balanced when i kite but yeah when your not into big tricks and stuff i dont see any problem with them at all.. i find it quite the blessing even to just get the salty taste outa your mouth. only problem is because its easy acess it runs out a bit quicker than you want

Ive never seen anything other than the genuine 'camelback' that works well.
1.5L is a good size but does run out way quicker than expected - just cos its so easy. Small sips is the G.O.

I use the Dakine rehydration pack. Keep a dollar or two in it for bus fare when the wind stops on a long downwinder.

I've used a normal 2l camelbak on the two Perth to Lano downwinders www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=25511

Water with electrolyte, banana, energy bars, $50 - for Bundies @ Lano Tav :-)

Also had GPS and mobile phone in Aquapaks.

I've seen crew kiting Gnaraloo wearing geeky sh1t like camelbacks.
lol.
I mean,
why not just have a real big swig of h2o (or your preferred beverage) just before you begin your sess ?
Hydrate, mate.

Over-accessorizing yourself is just plain nerdy and stupid at a heavy wavebreak,
and it just clutters-up your mind too.
Even having to wear booties annoys me when wavekiting over coralheads,
it is a sacrifice in sensitivity,
my toes can't feel the nose.....
But the alternative is death-by-a-1000-cuts.
Life is full of compromises.

Hey all,

I have a 3 litre Camelbak and use it whilst teaching on the beach in the sun all day. If I drink all three litres (I usually manage 2.5l), then I feel a million bucks instead of dead tired and wasted.

The originals are the best, the cheap copies are nasty and not worth the saving. IMHO

If you feel you need it, grab one, but shop around, prices vary .... a lot!

Cheers,

Do any of you guys that have used camelbacks while kiting found that the pack that holds the bladder fills up with sea water and becomes twice as heavy as there is little provision for it to drain? I had this problem when I tried it.

For the record Waveslave your body can only absorb so much water at any one time. It is possible to take small sips of fluid every 5 to 10 mins and easily consume 1.5 litres or more without the need to take a big slash. (yet all of this water has gone to your body and should stop you feeling the effects of dehydration). If you take a huge skull on the beach b4 you head out on a down winder for example, alot of that fluid will not be absorbed and will go to waste.

Also, I do use a camel back regularly for other sport and from experience cheap camel backs don't last eg. The ones you get from camping stores etc. It is worth spending the extra $$.

j.l yeah i found the same thing about filling with water.. it really messes with your balance when its water logged! thats why id rather leave it on the beach and take a drink every hour or so.

harden up and get used to being dehydrated. solves this thread!

Install a de-salinisation plant in your mouth....that would work too.

so much for kiting being a soul sport; GPS, camelbacks, waterproof mp3 players, kite mounted cameras, shark shields, food and emergency supply's that make it look like you intend on going more than 500m out... why bother, just keep it simple and fly
