When I started jumping soon after learning to kiteboard, it was on flat water and I had no trouble getting pop and going up and down. Since then I've only been kiting in the ocean for about 8months at least twice a week. I've been having so much fun waveriding, playing in the surf, backrolls, big long jumps off waves etc etc...

A couple of weeks ago I went down to the rivermouth for a session which I haven't done for about 8 months. When I tried to get some pop and do jumps off the flat water I just couldn't - I felt like a kook and probably looked like one too. Here's what I've been trying...:

Get some speed with a good edge, get the kite to about 10, bear off slightly down wind, turn the kite back to 2, edge the board back upwind to load the lines, pull the bar in...and then just a liitle bit of air (mainly long jumps as opposed to high)...

This is very concerning as I'm keen to start trying raileys which obviously won't work unless I can get heaps of pop.

I think it may be something to do with me not jumping the board or not releasing properly or something. I can get good air off a wave but I often do long fast jumps instead of high lofty ones - which are great unless you start a small rotation that you didn't intend and then land blind at speed... The board is a little stiff but I'm sure that a pro would have no trouble with the board.

Can anyone help.

Looks like you are trying too hard.
The reason you are doing long downwind jumps with no height is you are releasing the edge of your board too early. Hold the edge until the kite is higher in the window and you will get more height.
Also don't bear offwind for a regular jump if you are having problems at this stage as this just drops the kite in the zone and wont allow you to maintain the edge.

When you start doing your raileys you won't be sending the kite back so the technique will be different.

Hope this helps.

Bring your kite from 11 rather than 10 and youll jump higher rather than longer.
Play around with the intital start point 10:30, 10:45,11;30 and youll suss what cool for your kite and gear.
Maintain good board speed and edge. 8months in the ocean... Im jealous

Could be youre trying to load the lines up too much. If you sheet in too much before you jump it pulls you off your edge and defeats the purpose. Also, front rolls are easier off flat water because you jump off the back foot.

you will never have to buy a bow sleek; you've managed to be gay on a C kite for years now

Sound like you've lost your Mojo.

Dr Evil is hard to spot coz he wears a helmet these days. Just look for the 2 foot tall Dude on the 3m kite and custom 42cm long board. He'll know where it is. Beware he bites

Damn that dr Evil...

Thanks for the tips, think I've figured it out after my session yesterday arvo...I tried releasing the edge a bit later which worked quite well...just checking Marty's suggestion, I think I may be sheeting in too early, I'll try make a few more changes today...looks like we have another perfect northerly today

sleek, I kiteboard far too often to have time to even think about being gay...sounds like it's on your mind quite a bit...maybe you should come out of the closet...either that or go kiteboarding every now and again.

If anyone is having problems about there sexuality just click on my profile and look at my picture. Your concerns will be answered and confirmed. There are a few pics that rotate so watch them all in case u dont get the message off the first one.

You were getting a lot more air today sunseeker. Awesome session! The second you feel the most tension on your kite as you go to 12 is when to make your pop, dig the board down hard and jump away from the kite. A long progressive and fast edge prior to bogging the board down for the pop is essential.

All gayness aside, it is a relevant question. Have you switched to a Bow/SLE kite?

Your back lines are probably too slack.
Tinker with the knots.
You need some pressure on the bar,
if you want boosts on demand.

All gayness aside, I ride a TurboDiesel. After my 2.5 hr session on Friday afternoon, and after all your good suggestions I'm all fixed up now - I did some huge boosts which were awesome giving me loads of time for grabs and rotations and back rolls.

Nothing wrong with riding one just if you had only recently switched to one it may have had some influence.
Happy jumping.
