As I understand it, as of the 1st of January 2005, Australia will be comencing a free trade agreement with the USA...

This means NO IMPORT DUTIES from my soarces in the know !

Make sure your local shop/retailer pass's on the savings to you ?

This will be interesting...

We all wish. All it means is that import rates cannot be increased and should be reduced over time as per this note.
the info came from here http://www.dfat.gov.au/trade/negotiations/us.html
Section B : Tariffs

Article 2.3 : Elimination of Customs Duties
1. Except as otherwise provided in this Agreement, each Party shall progressively eliminate its customs duties on originating goods of the other Party in accordance with Annex 2-B (Tariff Elimination).

2. Neither Party may increase an existing customs duty or introduce a new customs duty on imports of an originating good, other than as permitted by this Agreement, subject to Annex2-A (Application of Chapter 2).

All it means is we stay as we are but some products have been agreed to be reduced. As we all saw in the news the sugar industry did not get the reduction.

Don't forget that some of the mail order gear coming out of the US is actually shipped out of China, so will still have duty payable.

A more important issue to consider if importing a kite is not the 5% duty it is public liability issue.

Under Australian law the importer is deemed to be the manufacturer and as such can be held liable if the products failure causes an injury.

I pay tens of thousands of dollars for insurance every year to cover this risk (as do all of the major brands) it is not worth taking the risk of loosing your house, however small the risk may be, all it takes is one failure on one kite and it might just be the first one.

OK the actual facts are as follows

The no import duties will apply ONLY to goods 100% made in the USA. This eliminates almost 100% of kites does it not??
It does not matter where it is shipped from, if it was originally made in China or anywhere outside of the USA, OR has a raw material content from other countries, then the 5% duties will stay.

It may however cause SOME price reductions on boards though, i know SOME boards at least are made 100% in the USA, although there are also a lot that aren't.

It is also the importers responsibility to prove to customs with the relevant paperwork etc that the goods are 100% USA made

Hope that clarifies a few things

It's something from my childhood. I wasn't allowed to get away with spelling mistakes so it irks me when everyone else is. Sorry, I am a nerd.

Their reply...

Dear Mr Brown
The customs tariff on sporting goods will be eliminated from 1 January
2005, regardless of whether the importaion is for personal or business use.
However, GST will continue to apply to the import of these goods. Please
contact the Department of Treasury (tel: 6263 1111) if you have further
queries.

Yours sincerely

Trade Commitments Branch
Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

Hello, could you please explain to me this...

Given the new rules/agreement between the US & Australia, If I import a
sporting good for personal use into Australia will I/it be subject to any
Taxes. Also If I import a sporting good inorder to be sold into Australia
will I/it be subject to any Taxes.

regards Rob Brown
