While in Cocos this July '06 we had gone over to Direction Island for a day of drinking, swimming and diving. Anyway as the story goes, one of the locals had kited down from the yatch club to the island that we were at. As he came into the island he hit what he initially thought was some reef. Looking down he saw a large silver object disappear. On closer inspection of his board there were some large teeth marks and scratches between on the back edge of his board between his feet. The large silver object that dished out the attack was in fact a 1.5m baracuda that we were diving and looking at about half an hour before(and exactly at the spot where he was attacked), so we can definitely vouch for it. Ugly looking bastard, with massive teeth and jaw. Apparently quite territorial!!

Great war wound on the board and definitely a good topic of conversation for the pub.

This couta sounds like the legendary "TOOTHIE". I recently replied to the sticky post, Shark Stories and made reference to toothie, During our 2 week trip in the Coco's( July/August 06), we had heard about this toothie. One of our crew, appropriately nicknamed "Burley", had a phobia about sharks and anything under the water with teeth. I've got some video of Burley preparing to go fishing(off the pier)one night. When asked what he was fishing for, the response was:,"that,Toothie b@stard, I'm not gettin in the water till he's out of it"
