I think hot water is good for removing wax. Not sure if you will wanna pour boiling water on your board but it will have to be reasonably hot.

To remove wax:

Next time you are at the beach on a hotish day face your top deck up and put a thin layer of beach sand over the wax.

Leave for board for a few minutes until you notice the wax melting. Use the smooth end of a wax saver to scrape the wax off. It comes off really easy. Just remember to throw the sand and wax in a bag for disposal.

You could just scrape it off with the back of a wax comb

Hot water and sun are fine for melting off the bulk of the wax but if you want to glue something to the deck or glass over it then you're going to need to get out some serious solvent the remove all traces of wax.

Acetone works once the bulk of the wax is removed. Lacquer thinners would probably do the job. Petrol's OK (for non smokers) but doesn't seem to get it all off

SIDE NOTE: Smokers can use petrol as well. Petrol won't ignite from a lit cigarette

I was under the impression while a smoke generally won't ignite liquid petrol, it could light the fumes from petrol in a hot/ dry environment (.e.g. Perth in summer).

Maybe not, but I wouldn't want to be the one who gave someone the advice that ended up in an accident. Was it really worth bringing that up? Are you 100% sure (and referencing Mythbusters does not qualify for 100% surety!)?

If it's an old surfboard that's not your pride and joy, I'd try putting some inserts in. There have been a few threads with good instructions recently, a friend just bogs in a chunk of plastic. Then you might want some deck grips, which will hide the crap job you did of glassing in inserts. My favourite straps for surfboards are deftinitely the non adjustable kind, just simple straps, not too wide so that you can twist your feet around. Check the shelves at your local kite shop.
If you need to clean the surfboard, heat the wax and scrape it off, turps should be a strong enough solvent to get the rest off, give it a good warm soapy wash and maybe even a fine wet and dry sand before you glue on new pads.

Yes to get wax off, agree scrape it off after softening in sun. The final traces are best removed with Acetone [it beats other solvents hands down and evaporates without trace] to leave the deck prepared for contact adhesives.

Glass in or Inserts or stick on strap iserts - expense and preference but stick on symptoms from surftech works well and doesn't weaken the board

I would avoid wider straps on surfboards and ride them quite loose to get your foot well so that the arch is acroos the midline not on the rail as on a twintip. This way you will get ood rail pressure both front and backside turns.

Well worth the hassles as strapped you can ride fast and aggressively though the chop and backwash, land lipsmack airs and skip the 'swim practice' [which is what most of the unstrapped guys in Perth seem to be doing].

I wouldn't smoke at the service station, but yes I am 100% sure. A ciggie will not ignite either liquid petrol or fumes. A live flame however can ignite fumes.
